Shaq was checking out luxurious cars to buy, for which he had also set a budget. But a snappy comment by staff at a dealership left him infuriated.
When one works hard to get out of their tough time, they develop integrity which they cling to for life. It hurts when people question it without having an idea of the journey the person has come through. Carmart Blog reported on Shaquille O’Neal's instance which caused him to purchase 3 Rolls-Royce cars for over $1.3 million at a car dealership when his financial status was questioned. The basketball player has sure come a long way and made his life as luxurious as possible with his hard work and talent. However, when questioned, he spared an effort to teach the critic a lesson.
Shaq was looking at the cars and was making his decision on whether to purchase or not when one of the staff enquired if he could even "afford" any of the prestigious cars. Known otherwise for his jovial personality, hearing the unruly comment, the athlete was enraged and decided to show with action rather than words. “I didn’t want to spend $400,000 on a car so I’m like, ‘Hey man, how much is this?’” Shaq recalled while sharing the story on Drink Champs. As soon as he heard the staff, he said, “What the f**k did you say to me?” and he immediately went over and purchased not one but 3 Rolls-Royce that day.
“So, I buy three, that one, that one and that one and I want them dropped off. Move the seat back. I got three Rolls Royce that I never drive. So, there goes another million,” Shaq said. While the athlete’s response may have seemed arrogant, it was fitting for the ruthless critic who passed off an unwanted comment. Shaq didn’t end up driving any of the cars but sure did place the commenter in their place.
The athlete is proud of his success but doesn’t misuse it. Although a presumably impulsive decision, Shaq used his purchasing power to give a sense of realization. He had earned his dignity and wealth and was not about to have it tampered with even by a menial comment. In the Earn Your Leisure Podcast, Shaq explained how his wealth is a reward behind his challenging life story and that it is to be earned not given, even if it’s his own kids. “My kids are older now. They are kinda upset with me – not really upset – but they don’t understand. Because I tell them all the time. We ain’t rich. I’m rich,” Shaq remarked.
He further added that he is not interested in passing down anything that is earned whether it’s his business, success or even wealth, it was hard-earned by him and will be handed down in the same manner. "You’ve got to have Bachelor’s or Master’s [degrees] and then if you want me to invest in one of your companies, you’re going to have to present it… bring it to me, I’ll let you know. I’m not giving you anything.”
