The family was at ease since they had given insulin to the child but decided to check again after Spy alerted them.
With time canines may have become furry friends that provide comfort and even emotional support to people across the globe apart from starring in viral videos. But they stay true to the origins of their relationship with human beings, by rising to the occasion as reliable protectors. A service dog named Spy proved why dogs are full of surprises and a blessing for their companions by saving a child. In a heartwarming TikTok video @theboggs_family posted how Spy woke up parents to alert them about a potential emergency involving their daughter’s juvenile diabetes. The caption with the video posted by the child's mother read, “The nose ALWAYS knows! Even when it’s sleeping.”
In the video, she added, “This is our daughter’s medical alert dog. He came downstairs after they had been asleep for a while to let us know something was wrong.” We can see the couple watching TV when the pup appears in front of them, trying to get their attention. “What is it, baby?” the mom asks as Spy, clearly worried, shakes his head back and forth, paces across the room, and finally, leads both parents upstairs to their daughter’s bedroom, where she’s still fast asleep.
More text explains that the little girl’s blood sugar monitor was charging, but they weren’t worried because they had given her insulin and changed her pump just an hour earlier. But they woke her up to test her blood sugar since Spy was trying to alert them.
“Obviously something was wrong, Spy was telling us, so we needed to check,” the video read. “This dog is such a blessing to our family. We truly can’t be more thankful.” After the test, the family learned that the little girl’s blood sugar wasn’t low, but was in fact, too high. Spy did his job and alerted them to a problem that needed to be fixed, and potentially prevented something worse that could've happened to the child.
Viewers in the comments not only praised the dog but also pointed out how the parents handled the situation. "I saw a doctor say diagnostic dogs are right 99% of the time. Love this!!" said @heylady58. "I don't understand how the dog can sense that!!! it's totally the greatest thing ever!!!! but how do you train that, how can the dog tell? so wild!" added @darrenveit. "Unimportant compared to everything else, but I love how your husband silently shows you her level. Doesn’t need to worry that baby," commented @rattlesmach. "My dog Sapphire used to do the same thing with my son's father before he passed. Saved him many times," @butterflykiss23 reminisced.
Service dogs often help their owners manage medical conditions, enabling them to live independently. Sparrow, a Golden Retriever, is another service dog who proved devotion to her owner, Libbi. Sparrow showcased her exceptional training and instincts in an incident that Libbi shared on Instagram.
While playing with Libbi, Sparrow suddenly started behaving unusually and showed "whale eyes" while sniffing intently. Initially, Libbi thought Sparrow was signaling her own discomfort, so she gave Sparrow the cue to stop playing. However, Sparrow's behavior was actually a warning as she had sensed that Libbi was about to experience pre-syncope symptoms, which could lead to serious issues such as nausea and loss of vision, while she could even collapse. Thanks to Sparrow’s timely alert, Libbi was able to lie down and manage her symptoms before they escalated. The situation was under control within 20 minutes, all because of Sparrow’s vigilant care and devotion.
