Ace gave them two choices: either they pay the $400 bill, or she involves the police, and their parents

The drill is clear. With the last few crumbs of dessert left on their plates, the diners guzzle down the last pint of wine, and before their tables catch the server’s attention, they make a beeline towards the exit. In a July 14, 2026, TikTok video, a restaurant server named Ace (@dear.ace) shared a similar dine-and-dash case that she encountered while serving a group of teenagers. However, along with the police, she ultimately helped the eatery recover the lost amount and get those teenagers off their high horses.

The other day, a big group of teenagers arrived at the restaurant while Ace was on duty. They were all dressed in fancy prom dresses, with proper hair and makeup. The group placed an order for multiple appetizers, mocktails, and some of the most expensive items on the menu. Ace, the server, was neutral about them, given that the kiddos were extremely nice to her. However, suspicion arose when the teenagers ordered a second round of dessert and soon after started disappearing from the table.

At one point, only two from the entire group remained. Without wasting time, Ace asked them about their friends, and the teenagers responded, saying they'd all gone to the bathroom. The server didn't believe them because she'd just gone to the washroom and didn't see any of them there. Realizing she was being duped, Ace gave the couple two choices: either they call their friends and pay the $400 bill, or she would call the police, who would inform their parents about the dine-and-dash.

Funnily enough, they had all traveled in a single car. So, the kids who'd run out thinking they'd escaped the bill, were actually waiting outside for the other two so they could all go home together. That's where Ace caught up with them. Eventually, the restaurant called the police and informed their parents as well. Consequently, the prom was cancelled for the six freeloaders. Although Ace felt she had become too “nosy” about the restaurant’s matter, in the video, she urged parents to be cautious and aware of their children’s outgoings. “Please educate your teenagers on how to go out,” she said.
Dine-and-dash cases and unpaid tabs are not isolated behaviors, but very common, both in the US and across the world. A survey by QikServe, cited by HospitalityNet, reported that more than one in ten diners leave the restaurant without paying. Similarly, in another survey of 1,500 UK diners, 8% openly admitted to leaving the restaurant without paying.

Kate Nicholls, the chair of UKHospitality, told the BBC that dine-and-dash is a growing problem, which often takes a toll on the mental health of restaurant workers. "It definitely has a mental impact on the waiter and the manager who handles all of that," affirmed Sanjay Jha, the owner of Thyme and Chillies in Birdham. Richard Atkinson, President of the Law Society, said that it's an offense that carries a maximum of two years in prison.

Meanwhile, viewers echoed that while parents should be more conscious, teenagers should start working in the hospitality industry to understand how servers feel when it happens to them. @stephdvdb commented, “I’d guess their parents gave them money for dinner and they all wanted to pocket the money and thought they’d get away with it.” @n3p3nth3s said, “I assume they were all privileged. No one who has worked in food service would stick a server with a $400 bill.” @nomuse13 reflected, “I hope the couple that got left behind realizes where they're the ‘Disposable tier in the hierarchy of that friend group.'”
