When a military spouse sends their partner off on a deployment, the emotional blueprint is usually simple. They have to endure isolation, count down the days, and keep the home fire burning. However, for Madds Santa (@madds.santamaria), the agonizing wait ended not in relief, but in a quiet, soul-crushing revelation. Well, after living away from her ex-husband for almost a year, she decided to surprise him at work with some homemade tacos. But things went downhill when she discovered her husband had been cheating on her with a coworker for 9 months. Santa shared her story on August 27, 2025, and her post has received over 49,000 likes on TikTok.

Cheater busted

When Santa's ex-husband was deployed overseas for 9 months, she quietly embraced the silent sacrifices of military life. Well, it was her first time experiencing deployment as a military wife, but her commitment remained unwavering. "I was faithfully waiting for him for the entire nine months," she recalled, confident that their bond was strong and that he missed her just as deeply. Sure enough, her husband also pretended to be a loving husband when he finally returned. In fact, Santa said their marriage felt great, with no red flags or altered behavior to suspect anything had gone wrong.

But the illusion shattered on a routine evening when her husband was assigned a 24-hour duty shift. Wanting to support him, she cooked dinner and brought extra food to the station for his sergeant, a man she had previously hosted for Thanksgiving dinner. Instead of a warm welcome, the sergeant looked at her "like he saw a ghost" and pulled her aside.

His panic said it all

The sergeant asked Santa if she was still married, revealing that her husband had spent the entire deployment publicly dating a female coworker. To conceal the affair, he had even told his unit that he was separated and going through a divorce. Shocked and shaken to the core, Santa headed towards her car.

It was then that her ex-husband spotted her and asked what was wrong, only to panic when she confronted him. He began spiraling and rambling, claiming all of that was just a misunderstanding and that someone was plotting against their marriage. But Santa refused to speak with him and drove away. Overwhelmed by grief, she broke down sobbing behind the wheel and was pulled over for speeding. Seeing her visibly distraught state, the compassionate officer let her go with a warning.

A rising trend

Well, following this confrontation, Santa divorced her husband, which, although unfortunate, is quite common among military couples. In fact, according to a study conducted by Syracuse University researchers, 32.17% of veterans report extramarital sexual relationships. Interestingly, it is twice the rate among non-veterans. The data and Santa's story further highlight how sadly common it is for military spouses to experience being cheated on by their partners. "We conclude that veteran status is strongly associated with extramarital sex and divorce, at least among men," the research concluded.

That said, the people also pointed out this massive issue amongst military couples. Meanwhile, many appreciated the sergeant for telling Santa the truth. For instance, @behindthemask044 wrote, "Girl, military and happy marriage doesn’t even go together." Similarly, @melainejansen04 revealed her own experience and wrote, "I found out my military ex was cheating because a girl that worked on lower base filed a complaint against him because she had broken up with him and he was bothering her…"
