Owner surrenders pet dog to animal shelter, but his handwritten 'explanation' note is gut-wrenching

'Zero aggression. Zero barking. All the love. Couch potato that doesn’t get up on furniture unless called,' the letter to Polk County read.

The hardest thing to do in love is to let go because you want the best for the other. That’s what 8-year-old Diva’s pet parent wanted for her, reported Newsweek. The Polk County Bully Project in Florida shared a post on Facebook on February 21 about a senior dog left in their safe space with a handwritten note. The staff immediately took her in, but they were confused about her being abandoned, as she seemed well-cared for. After reading the letter shared in the comments, they realized that Diva was indeed cherished. Still, her pet parent had to make the heartbreaking decision following an unprecedented situation in his life.

The clip captured the sweet fur baby in one of the kennels, and staff mentioned that they found her there when they came to work in the morning. Along with Diva was a handwritten note revealing everything about her. She had been adopted and was titled the “A1 dog of the month” by her owner. The person mentioned that her hips hurt each time she woke up, but added that she was a happy and amazing canine. Along with being great with every animal and human being, she also had her own features and peculiarities. “Zero aggression. Zero barking. All the love. Couch potato that doesn’t get up on furniture unless called,” the letter continued.

The details revealed that this owner knew his dog and had a bond that was tight-knit and secure. Further details were her manners, ethics, and food instructions. After that came a soul-stopping honest reason as to why she was left. “Dad is homeless and unable to provide stable accommodations that she deserves,” the note read. The vulnerability is shattering because it's hard to imagine how the man chose to make that decision — all because of love. “Nothing makes your heart drop faster than that moment — realizing someone had to make an impossible choice,” the caption of the post read.

It was so evident that Diva was loved, especially in the bittersweet decision to let go of her so she could have a healthy and secure life. “Loving her meant letting her go somewhere safe,” the post added. The shelter further put out a request that such a loved senior dog deserves to get back into a home full of belonging and family, and should be fostered or adopted. One can only hope someone comes through.

There are so many like Diva, who are separated from their families for umpteen devastating reasons. According to the ASPCA, 5.8 million cats and dogs entered shelters in 2024. While a majority were adopted, around 607,000 were euthanized. Pets enter these spaces due to several reasons, such as the death of pet parents, abandonment, or helpless separation due to financial struggles, as Diva’s owner had.

These furry guys often have no idea and don’t understand the reason for being separated from their family and from all they know. A 2025 study revealed that dogs who feel abandoned tend to be anxious and have security issues. However, they didn't stop giving out love; when experimented with, abandoned dogs did show a potential to love and form an affectionate bond with their new owner. They were made to love. People poured in support in the comments. Kendal Musyimi wrote, “Oh, that note included every detail you’d need to know. She was so loved. This is so sad.” Diane Bach added, “This is so heartbreaking, glad she is safe with you. You can definitely see how much she was loved.”
