Celebrities time and again encounter body shamers. Some say it is the price that they pay because they're always out and about in the public eye which makes them more susceptible to unwanted scrutiny. Regardless of being a celebrity, everyone knows how demeaning it can feel to have someone say negative things about your skin and body. Fatphobia, hate, and body shaming are things that seem to be deeply entrenched in the very social fabric of society. If you're fat, it is looked down upon, if you're skinny, they call you a stick, same with being lean and muscular. There is just no winning anymore. This is also a reflection of the notorious beauty standards that clearly continue to exist. Thankfully, celebrities are deciding to step up and shut down haters who have opinions regarding their bodies. One such celebrity is Selena Gomez.

At the 80th edition of the Golden Globe Awards, many celebrities from Rihanna to Michelle Yeoh graced the red carpet in their finery. Selena walked down the red carpet with her sister, Gracie Elliot Teefey and they both looked amazing. But it looks like the body shamers weren't impressed, reports HuffPost. The singer took to Instagram with her sister, where she said “I’m a little bit big right now because I enjoyed myself during the holidays,” before asking Gracie, “I mean… right?” to which Gracie replied, “Yeah!” She then added, “But we don’t care.”

In an Instagram Live last year, she clapped back at some people who wrote negative comments about her body. Some commented saying that Gomez looked fat and that she had gained a few pounds. To this, she had the most carefree response saying, “I don’t care about my weight because people bitch about it anyway. ‘You’re too small. You’re too big. That doesn’t fit,’” she said, adding “B****, I am perfect the way I am.” The queen has spoken, period. In an interview with Vogue, Gomez talked about how she has been off the internet for three years and if she wanted to post something, she would just send it to her assistant who would post it on Instagram and Twitter.

“I woke up one morning and looked at Instagram, like every other person, and I was done,” she told the outlet. “I was tired of reading horrible things. I was tired of seeing other people’s lives. After that decision, it was instant freedom. My life in front of me was my life, and I was present, and I could not have been more happy about it,” she added. She has also been transparent about her health problems, especially her battles with mental health, and she has talked about using her position and experiences to make other people feel less alone. Her makeup line, Rare Beauty is also a cause-driven endeavor that is selling like hotcakes in stores and has raised millions to help bring light onto the gaps in mental health services.

As for her looking like a vision in velvet at the Golden Globes, most people loved her look. Gomez wore a velvet Valentino with intricate statement details. The strapless gown had a long train, large puffy eggplant-colored sleeves, a little cutout in the bust, and a slit up the center. She added a dash of contemporary style by wearing the gown with black platform shoes with an exposed toe, according to Style Caster. Usually, Gomez sports more sequined dresses and silk but this time she decided to go for a more for a somber yet feminine look.

She donned a high ponytail with beautiful locks and wore Rare Beauty's glowy foundation with some blush. Since there was purple in her outfit, she complimented the look with a hint of purple lipstick and eyeshadow. And, as we're all aware of the no necklace collarbone trend on TikTok, Gomez went for a bare neck look and her diamond drop earring stood out as her main accessory.
