A decades-old study reveals that everyone with blue eyes may be descended from a single person thousands of years ago.
When we talk about attractive features, beautiful blue eyes are considered among the top beauty standards. Whether men or women, people with distinctive blue eyes often receive endless compliments from family, friends, and even strangers. But what if we told you that people all across the globe with blue eyes are descendants of a single person? Well, not just us; technically, a nearly decade-old study published by Science Daily says so. Are you curious and want to know why? Keep reading! Earlier, everyone had different shades of brown eyes until a specific mutation occurred in humans. Yes, you read that right!
People with blue eyes are the result of a genetic mutation that occurred thousands of years ago, according to the outlet. To understand this genetic variation, researchers examined the OCA2 gene, which is responsible for determining the level of brown pigment in the human eye. However, it was revealed that the genetic mutation resulting in blue eyes is due to a completely different gene called HERC2. "Originally, we all had brown eyes. But a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene in our chromosomes resulted in the creation of a 'switch,' which literally 'turned off' the ability to produce brown eyes," Professor Hans Rudolf Lytchoff Eiberg from the University of Copenhagen shared.
But then, how do we know all people with blue eyes are descendants of a single person? This is because every person around the world with blue eyes has the same genetic mutation, the news outlet claimed. Reportedly, when humans migrated from Africa to Europe, this particular mutation occurred. This groundbreaking discovery was made in 2008 by the talented scientists at the University of Copenhagen.
"From this, we can conclude that all blue-eyed individuals are linked to the same ancestor. They have all inherited the same switch at exactly the same spot in their DNA," Eiberg shared. Also, Professor Eiberg had an answer for people with green eyes. "Meanwhile, people who have green eyes can be explained by the fact they have a reduced amount of melanin in the iris, which is very different from those with blue eyes," he shared, per LADbible.
On a related note about blue eyes, Rae, who goes by @maxedoutmommy on TikTok, shared the possibility of finding the ideal guy, based on Megan Boni's song, "Man In Finance." Among other criteria, such as a career in finance and being tall, the viral song also highlighted the necessity for having a blue-eyed man. Rae hilariously took the opportunity to make a PowerPoint presentation, explaining why it's nearly impossible to find a guy like that. In the video, she discussed each trait explained in Boni's song and shared what percentage of men fulfill that specific requirement. Similarly, when she came to discuss men with blue eyes, she said, "There are more men in the US with blue eyes than in other parts of the world. There are 27% of people who have blue eyes, so that narrows us down to 6 men," Ray explained. She concluded that there are only a handful of men who have blue eyes, work in finance, have a trust fund, and are 6’5”, thus fulfilling all the criteria of an ideal man.
