It took him 6 months to pan out the plan because he wanted it to be 'as memorable as possible.'
The morning of April 1, 2025, began with birds chirping in a sweeter tone than usual, the sun shone as brightly as it could, and the couples in the park kissed and smiled brightly, yet no one knew what would follow. This was the day Oklahoma kindergarten teacher Julie Bargas’ life changed for good when something unexpected happened in her classroom. PEOPLE shared her glowing story that's enough to warm one's heart on the coldest of days.
The morning began like any other for Bargas at Frontier Elementary in Edmond when she got called into the administrator assistant’s office for a meeting. The children were enjoying their recess inside the classroom, as the weather was not favourable for playing outside. The conversation at the office, which lasted all of 15 minutes, included questions like “So, how are you feeling? Like, how's everything going?” The 44-year-old teacher was surprised because they "never really talk on that personal level."
After the “meeting” was over, she returned to her class without any idea of the gargantuan surprise waiting for her. The students had formed a line outside the class, which is generally a sign of trouble. As she approached them, each kid gave her a fake ring, moving along until Bargas arrived at the door to her classroom. There he was, Josh Payne, her boyfriend, down on one knee, holding a bouquet of flowers, ready to pop the question in the presence of her students and school staff. “It was really sweet," said Bargas, adding that it was a "miracle" the kids could keep it a secret.
Payne told the outlet that it took him 6 months to pan out the plan because he wanted it to be "as memorable as possible." The couple had started dating three years ago after they met through a mutual connection in their lives. Both are divorced and have kids — Bargas has a 15-year-old son and a 12-year-old daughter, while Payne has an 8-year-old girl. Their story is enough to restore your faith in love in this dreary, often unpredictable world.
Despite people largely looking down on the concept of divorce and remarriage, according to a study by Dewi Widiastuti, “Approximately half of all marriages in the United States inevitably end in divorce or permanent separation. In addition, a considerable number of marriages do not encounter separation, but the relationship is tarnished by persistent tension between parents. The results showed that the separation that occurred in both parents and disputes that occurred in a marital relationship elevated children's risk, such as the occurrence of problems: Behavioral, emotional, social, and academic issues.” So, it remains in the best interest of children that they get to see their parents as healthy individuals living an emotionally healthy life, with or without a significant other.
Love is substantial for every living being — no matter how many times your heart has broken, love has the power to heal it. Love teaches you to be humble and spontaneous, never giving up, standing steadfast even as the world crumbles around you. At a time when emotions are being polarized and everybody portrays various versions of themselves online and offline, it is truly an honor, a gift, to be able to find another human worth building a life with.
