It's been six years since the curtain fell on the legendary Robin Williams' life. Yet, bittersweet memories of the beloved actor/comedian remain fresh in the minds of his fans across the globe. More so this week as the star who made the whole world laugh would've turned 69-years-old on Tuesday, July 21. Williams' loyal fanbase honored the icon on social media by sharing some of their fondest memories of the actor and it was yet another reminder of how the Mrs. Doubtfire star will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

While Williams made a career for himself a stand-up comedian and actor who made his audience laugh, in his personal life, he battled demons that wreaked havoc in his brain. Although it was widely reported following his death in August 2014 that he had been depressed, the star's wife Susan Williams set the record straight in a 2015 interview with PEOPLE. "It was not depression that killed Robin," she said. "Depression was one of let’s call it 50 symptoms and it was a small one." An autopsy of the actor's body revealed that he had Diffuse Lewy Body Dementia or Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), a debilitating brain disease that causes fluctuations in mental status, hallucinations, and impairment of motor function.

"Robin is and will always be a larger-than-life spirit who was inside the body of a normal man with a human brain. He just happened to be that 1 in 6 who is affected by brain disease," Susan wrote in a 2016 article titled The Terrorist Inside My Husband's Head for the medical journal Neurology. "Not only did I lose my husband to LBD, I lost my best friend. Robin and I had in each other a safe harbor of unconditional love that we had both always longed for. For 7 years together, we got to tell each other our greatest hopes and fears without any judgment, just safety. As we said often to one another, we were each other's anchor and mojo: that magical elixir of feeling grounded and inspired at the same time by each other's presence."

As we look back at the actor's life and the invaluable contributions he made to this world, here are 15 incredibly powerful quotes from Williams' reel and real life:

2. "There is still a lot to learn and there is always great stuff out there."

3. "You don't know about real loss because it only occurs when you've loved something more than you love yourself."

4. "I used to think the worst thing in life was to end up all alone. It's not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people that make you feel all alone."

5. "You know what music is? God’s little reminder that there’s something else besides us in this universe."

6. "I think the saddest people always try their hardest to make people happy. Because they know what it's like to feel absolutely worthless and they don't want anybody else to feel like that."

7. "You will have bad times, but they will always wake you up to the stuff you weren't paying attention to."
