Pulling off a spontaneous dinner plan with eleven people is never easy, but finding a table that accommodates everyone becomes nearly impossible when five people in the group realized they couldn’t eat most of what was on the menu. This was precisely the dilemma a person (u/Significant-Job-4419) and their friends were facing after they decided to head out. After finally finding a casual local spot willing to seat the mixed group, they thought their hunt came to an end. The relief was short-lived when the server informed them that five people couldn't order from the kids' menu. To avoid leaving half the table hungry, the group decided to leave. However, the server then said something unexpected, prompting one of them to share the story on Reddit on September 13, 2026, which received 3,800 upvotes.

Scoring a table for eleven

The evening kicked off casually when a blended crew of eleven, a mix of four friends of this person and their sister's friends, decided to grab a bite. Given the size of their group, they assumed getting a seat would be a big task. However, to their surprise, they were able to snag one in a nearby restaurant. The restaurant warned them there would be an extra charge because of the large party size. To them, getting a table without much hassle felt so good that they didn't think twice, especially with five of them being on dietary restrictions.

The menu dead end

Settling into the booth brought an immediate hurdle as the five people began searching for options on the menu. "We asked our server if they would be allowed to get the kids' meal," the person said. The kids' meal contained a vegetable burger along with some fries on the side. Since there wasn't a vegetarian option in the adults' section, the person thought this would be the best route forward. However, before they could proceed any further, the server told them that it wouldn't be possible since all of them were adults. They refused to make the exception.

Cashing out and walking away

Unwilling to let five people sit hungry at the table, the group decided to settle the tab and walk out. So, they paid for the two fountain sodas they ordered and even left a generous tip. However, it was then that the manager stepped in and asked if there was a reason they were leaving before eating anything. "We told them about the whole thing of not being able to eat," the person revealed. Nonetheless, the group began walking out, picking up their bags and other accessories. Meanwhile, they watched the server being yelled at by the manager. 

An unprovoked confrontation

Initially, they thought it had nothing to do with them. But when one of the friends forgot her phone and went back inside to collect it, she was stopped by the server. The server then told her, "We shouldn’t have come if we didn’t want to eat anything, and now she’s getting written up because we left," they noted. Leaving the restaurant bewildered, the group wondered whether they did something wrong by walking away without eating anything. 

Lower overall satisfaction

Surprisingly enough, vegetarians and vegans go out more often than other adults across the United States. According to a YouGov poll, vegans and vegetarians dine out frequently despite reporting lower satisfaction with restaurants. Around 30% visit casual-dining restaurants at least once a week, compared with 17% of U.S. adults overall. But their average 'satisfaction score' for casual restaurants was 27, compared with 39 among the general population.

Should change their menu

The people, on the other hand, feel the restaurant should've handled the situation better. u/Franoceanlsmyson commented, "Ntah seems like they need to overhaul their menu and the manager just needed someone to yell at." u/Longjumping_Salt4118 wrote, "NTA, you've asked and been told not to order from the kids' menu.
