The man refused to buzz his neighbor in though he knew that she and her dog would have to wait in the dark during the wee hours.
The level of entitlement some people exhibit can be truly mind-boggling. Reddit user u/THROWRA1900482 shared his frustration about an inconsiderate neighbor who frequently disturbed him. The issue was simple: she refused to follow the apartment block's rule that requires residents to carry a key to the front door after 8 p.m. Instead, she found a way to bypass the rule and let herself in whenever she pleased. But eventually, this resident had enough and decided to teach her a lesson.
The neighbor made it a habit to leave the building’s back door unlocked, so she wouldn’t need to carry her key. "She isn't supposed to do this and she has been told multiple times to take her front door key in case the door locks, which she has ignored," the man mentioned. Whenever she was locked out, the neighbor buzzed the man's apartment or knocked his windows loudly to get him to open doors for her. "It is daily and it riles up my dog every time - and it always occurs after 9 pm. I have let her in twice in good faith, then told her the third time to take her key and that I will no longer be answering," the man explained.
But the neighbor repeated the same behavior. Frustrated by being treated like a "doorman," the resident shut off his buzzer when she started buzzing him and knocking on his windows. He intentionally ignored her for over 45 minutes despite knowing it was dark outside and she had to wait on the doorstep with her dog. "She has been sitting outside on the doorstep on her phone, angrily ranting about me to her friends, like I'm her dad. I don't know this woman aside from her treating me like a concierge," he concluded. He wondered if he was wrong to leave her and her dog waiting in the dark in a "shady" area, but the internet backed him up.
"Some people feel entitled to everything and think everyone else lives to make them favors and they don't even see those as favors. You did everything right and in a civil way before taking action," said u/Dizzy-Potato3557. "She needed to learn a lesson, and even after telling her, she still didn't take her key. She still had her dog with her though, and was next to your house, so it wasn't that dangerous," reassured u/vt2022cam. "You're not her doorman and it's not your fault or responsibility to let her in if she doesn't bring a key. She's an adult and needs to start acting like one," added u/skelly10s.
Despite the outpouring of reassurance from the internet, the man chose to be the bigger person and eventually let his careless neighbor into the apartment. "I opened the door. I said I wouldn't, but quite frankly, I literally couldn't go to sleep knowing she and her dog were out there," he updated in his post. But he didn't let her go without a warning and even told her he would call the police if she continued to disturb him. "I'm going to just hope that a few hours outside has got the message across - sorry for everyone who told me not to give in, but it's nearing midnight here and as much as she pisses me off I'm not about to leave her out there," the considerate resident added.
