Singer Raye installs a ‘heartbreak plaque’ outside her ex’s favorite pub — and the internet can't get over this petty win

The celebrity singer's recently released song 'Nightingale Lane' draws inspiration from the same place and the breakup that happened there.

British singer-songwriter Raye has found a creative way to process heartbreak, and the internet cannot stop talking about it. On March 9, the 28-year-old recently revealed on her TikTok account (@raye) that she had installed what she called a "heartbreak plaque" outside a pub in south London that her former boyfriend used to frequent. The news was later shared by the @thebritspot and also the club on their Instagram @nightingalepubbalham

The plaque appeared outside The Nightingale pub on Nightingale Lane in Balham and looked strikingly similar to the traditional blue plaques commonly seen across the UK that mark places connected to notable historical figures, as per The Standard. Instead of honoring a famous residence or historic event, however, this one carried a far more personal message. It reads: "RAYE experienced the greatest heartbreak she has ever known here." In the caption, she explained the motivation behind the gesture, writing, "Put a nice plaque on my ex's fav pub so he'll never forget," before jokingly adding, "My dramatic era #cheers."

The playful stunt spread across social media, where many fans praised the singer’s sense of humor and bold approach to closure. As per HuffPost, singer-songwriter Absolutely, who is also Raye’s sister, joined the conversation in the comments and wrote, "Being the ex of a songwriter is not for the weak. Never mind the world's best songwriter." The plaque also connects directly to Raye’s newest music. Her recently released song "Nightingale Lane" draws inspiration from the same place and the breakup that happened there. The opening line of the track references the painful memory behind the location, describing it as "the greatest heartbreak" she has experienced.

The lyrics go on to describe the moment the relationship ended and the years it took for her to recover from the loss. The singer has previously spoken about the breakup publicly and how deeply it affected her. In an interview with Vogue, she shared that the relationship lasted two years, and at one point, she believed it would lead to marriage. "My last devastating break-up was four, five years ago. I was like, 'I’m gonna marry him,'" she said, adding, "We was together for two years and it ended up not working out. I have never experienced a more crippling emotion."

Heartbreak is intensely personal, but the emotional impact of a breakup is something different people struggle with in different ways. Binghamton University surveyed 5,705 people across 96 countries and found that women tend to experience more intense emotional and physical pain immediately after a breakup, rating their emotional distress at an average of 6.84 out of 10 compared to 6.58 for men. However, researchers also found that women are more likely to recover more fully over time, while men often carry the emotional effects longer.

Raye also admitted that moving on from the relationship was not easy. "It took me three, four years to get over him. Like, I can’t allow myself to fall in love again until it’s safe," she said. The plaque outside the pub appears to be both a playful jab and a symbolic way of reclaiming a place tied to those painful memories. The singer has not publicly identified the former partner involved.
