Man hurling racist slurs at creator during livestream gets a payback he could never have predicted
valentinrussanov

A TikTok livestream about Pokémon cards and video games took an ugly turn when a white man joined in and repeatedly hurled the n-word. The target was Tamo, a Black creator known online as @norratamo, and he decided the hate wouldn’t end on his screen. Tamo, who has built a following of more than 111,000 on TikTok, with active audiences on Twitch and YouTube, didn't brush it off when the slurs started. In a video posted afterward, on August 30, that has now been viewed by 19.5 million people so far and liked by 4.8 million, he called out the man who harassed him.

"Guess what? You’re gonna get kicked out of the United States Navy," Tamo said. "You know how they tell us that we should be careful what we do on social media, because there could be real-life consequences. Hi, my name is real-life consequence." He explained that he had already uncovered the man’s identity, gone through his disciplinary history, and collected all the receipts. Then he detailed what he planned to do next: send the evidence to the Naval inspector general, to his fellow Black sailors, and even to his church. And he left no doubt about how serious he was. "There’s nothing you can do to stop me. There is no apology I will accept. There is no excuse I will listen to. There is no money you could offer me. You’re getting fired."

Tamo went further, spelling out exactly what accountability would look like. He described the man’s future in vivid terms, adding, "When you are working the graveyard shift at an Amazon warehouse, and your back hurts, and your feet hurt, and white bright lights are beating down on you, and the teenager who still has his life ahead of him walks up to you and says, 'What are you doing here?' Tell him the truth. Tell him about me."

@norratamo This is how I feel about everyone saying I’m going too far because he has a family 😭 #trending #fyp ♬ creds to blainejordan - guns

Considering the amount of online hate only seems to keep increasing, Tamo’s video hit the nail on the head. A 2023 longitudinal study tracked 602 Black and White adolescents over 58 days in 2020 and found a sharp increase in online racial discrimination among Black youth, a rise that strongly predicted poorer same-day and next-day mental health (including depression, anxiety, and stress). These mental health impacts were directly tied to experiences of racial harassment online. Tamo’s video became a living example of that truth, and his flipping the script on racist harassment showed trolls everywhere that the words they type behind a screen can follow them into their workplaces, their communities, and their lives.

The video drew waves of support and commentary across TikTok. @foreverxorr commented, "I will never understand why people are racist, you gain nothing from it." @EAce added, "This is why you DON'T make enemies on the Internet, but also it costs nothing to be a good person." @jackiekonassis commented, "I love this level of serving FAFO. People get too bold, thinking they’re being clever. Too comfortable thinking they have enough 'BIA's online because orange trees are trying to make rotten citrus more palatable."

@braidonk04 wrote, "As someone in the Navy, THERE IS A 0% TOLERANCE ON RACISM; THIS WILL DESTROY HIS CAREER. It just baffles me how someone who works with all different cultures and types of people in the military would think this is ok, it’s disgusting, not funny or smart. Why would anyone be so ignorant?" @mully.zz said, "Damn, this went harder than Meet the Grahams."
