The professor was known for being eccentric and imaginative and worked on several systems that became the base of modern inventions.
It always seems fascinating to think about all those predictions and prophecies that have come true. Flying cars, virtual reality overtaking life and so on are among such. At the same time, these assumptions give us an idea of what people thought about the future at that time. Thankfully, some prophecies, like the end of the world, didn't come true, but many predictions have turned out to be somewhat accurate. Similarly, professor Archibald Montgomery Low, known for his eccentricity and imagination, published a paper titled "The Future" and made predictions about what the world would look like 100 years from 1925. Some of his predictions came true, as per Find My Past.
Low was an engineer, research physicist and inventor. He also wrote more than 40 books in his lifetime. He was credited with the development of the first powered drone as well as for the development of television. Much in line with the work, the professor predicted that television and at-home loudspeakers would replace newspapers as a mode of news and entertainment. In 1914, he demonstrated the first model of television, which he had called "TeleVista" at that time. Another fascinating prediction was "moving sidewalks" designed to save people from the physical exertion of walking and climbing stairs, quite similar to escalators that exist in modern times.
Also, he predicted mobile phones, which he called "automatic telephones" at the time. The main benefit of the phones would be that they would be able to get the number right every time, as per Low. Although the phones have become much more advanced than what the professor thought, his prediction did come true. He had also made prophecies about the use of clean energy by 2025. He thought people would be able to harness energy from tides and waves to generate electricity and carry out other operations. It is in sync with the increasing attempt to use renewable energy more often to prevent the depletion of resources and to decrease pollution.
Another prediction was that machinery would replace humans for the heavy and disagreeable work that impacts people's health in various ways. Alarm clocks were another fascinating prediction made by the professor. He believed that people living a hundred years later would have wireless systems that wake them up. He hoped the alarm would be set to nine-thirty in the morning. (Before the invention of alarm clocks, people in the UK would be woken up by knocker-uppers who had a duty to knock at each house and wake people up). Low also predicted that people would be enjoying the health benefits of "radio light treatment or massage" in a hundred years.
He was also developing that technology at the time but predicted it would become really popular in the future. Although, it is important to note that not all of his predictions have come true (yet). One such prediction is of the cinema viewing glasses where he predicted people going to the movies would be allowed to pick the movie they view with the help of their glasses. Hence, instead of several people viewing one movie on a screen, they would watch a different movie while being in the same room.
