There are viral videos, and then there’s the heartwarming video that recently took social media by storm, capturing Georgia high schoolers pulling off the prank of a lifetime on their principal. The heartwarming story was reported by many news channels, including TODAY, leaving millions of viewers moved by the powerful bond between an educator and his students. The original post was made by Lauren Centrell on Facebook on October 8, 2026, and has gained over 8.2 million views and 151,000 likes since.

Chaos in the cafeteria

It all started when 51-year-old Bobby Davis, the first-year principal at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School, was sitting in his office. Suddenly, someone rushed in to alert him that a heated fight had broken out down in the cafeteria. Refusing to let violence happen under his watch, Davis bolted down the hallway and rushed toward the noise. Stepping into the lunchroom, his worst fears seemed confirmed: a tight circle of teenagers stood around with their phones raised high, surrounding two boys locked in what appeared to be an intense physical fight.

From panic to party

Intent on putting an end to the altercation, Davis barged through the crowd and grabbed hold of a student he recognized right away, a teenager with a history of behavioral trouble. But the moment he intervened, the intense standoff completely dissolved into enthusiastic cheer. The entire crowd broke into smiles, clapping and shouting, “Happy Birthday!” The entire physical fight had been fake, orchestrated by the student body to surprise Davis for his 51st birthday. His initial panic instantly gave way to sheer excitement, and within seconds, the principal was embracing students and jumping up and down in celebration. Recalling the emotional shift, Davis admitted, “I kind of went back to being a kid again.”

A bond built on mentorship and love

The student behind the clever prank was 17-year-old senior De’Zayviun Watkins, who organized the whole thing to show his principal how much he appreciated him. Watkins shared that back when he was younger, he really struggled with anger and was always getting into fights. Things started to turn around for him during 10th grade through football, where Davis was involved as a coach. After practice, the two would sit down and talk, and Davis slowly became the mentor Watkins needed.

He encouraged Watkins to channel his energy into writing poetry, making music, and working toward trade school. Looking back on how much Davis helped turn his life around, Watkins said, “If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today,” adding, “He doesn’t care about the scoreboard. He doesn’t care about the win streak. He cares about the kids.”

Power of a good teacher

The surprise the students gave Davis was a way to thank him for being a good teacher. According to the ING Foundation Teacher Survey mentioned by Moorpark Acorn, 88% of people say they had a teacher who had a "significant, positive impact". Another 98% believe that a good teacher can change the course of a student’s life. Furthermore, in a YouGov poll, 53% of Americans claim that they had a school teacher who changed their lives for the better, resulting in who they have become today. The research poll also highlights that 22% say that they had a teacher who made their life worse.

Viewers flooded the comment section with emotional reactions, praising Principal Davis for his dedication and laughing at how fast he sprinted to stop the fight. Paige Ivey Evatt wrote, “This is why they say ‘not all heroes wear capes’. What a legend!” Meanwhile, Jessica Gray added, “The love the kids have for him says a lot about his character." Laura Higgins-Bates says, "He loves those kids and they love him.."
