A beautiful dress in her late mom's closet was a clue that she knew her daughter would give birth to a baby girl

"Hey, I found a shirt with the tags on. Do you want to keep it?" her cousin asked, and Lisa Jones (@gigglesbyjones) walked to her late mom’s closet, probably expecting to see a shirt. But what she saw instead moved her to tears, making her realize that Cathy, her late mom, had been anticipating a granddaughter even before she knew Jones was pregnant. The Los Angeles-based content creator shared the heartfelt story on February 24, and her video has received 5.5 million views on Instagram.
Jones first shared the gender reveal back in January 2026. As soon as her husband, Jordan, told her that they were expecting a baby girl, her jaw dropped, but not because she had anticipated a boy. It was because the news reminded her of a beautiful gift her late mom had left for her baby. Well, in May 2023, Jones experienced her biggest nightmare as she lost both her parents just a day apart. Following their demise, she spent most of her time cleaning her parents' house and donating most of their clothes to the shelters. During one such occasion, Jones' cousin informed her about a shirt in her mom's closet. Confused, she went inside, but what she saw immediately moved her to tears. "It was a dress, a baby's dress — the same dress that my mom and I both had. She bought the dress before I was pregnant and while she was sick," Jones shared. Moreover, she explained that her mom perhaps got the dress hoping to match outfits with her daughter and granddaughter.

"When I found out I was having a girl, immediately my first thought was the dress. And after I found out, I went and just held the dress and cried. It's all so wild and painful and beautiful at the same time," Jones told TODAY, reflecting on the emotional moment. Moreover, the woman revealed that her mom loved matching outfits with her. In fact, Jones recalled, "I would go and buy a dress at Zara, and I would come over to her house for Sunday night dinner. And she would be like, 'Where did you get that dress?'" and then she would spring right over to the same outlet to buy a matching dress.
Cathy was an unstoppable woman who had her daughter's back for everything. However, in 2022, she was diagnosed with a lung disease. Meanwhile, Jones’ father, John, also required around-the-clock caregiving to help with his Parkinson’s disease. Jones left her job and started caring for them. After the two passed away, she spent most of the following year cleaning up their family house, rummaging through childhood relics, donating parents’ clothing to shelters, and poring through memories with the help of her friends and cousins. "I did a lot of it by myself because I just was focused on getting everything cleaned, but it was painful because every item in that house had a memory to it," she recalled while speaking to the outlet.
A 2020 study published in Schizophrenia Bulletin documents that around 47% to 82% of bereaved individuals feel the presence of a loved one while rummaging through the things they left. Oftentimes, these things carry attachments to emotional memories, sensory experiences, or signs, something that psychologists call Sensory/Quasi-Sensory Experiences of the Deceased (SEDs) or After-Death Communications (ADC). In Jones’ case, the experience was just as much physical as psychological. She may have lost her parents' physical presence, but their belongings stir a heartfelt memory each time she looks at them.

Meanwhile, reacting to Jones' video, @fraukorth shared, "My dad died when I was 6 months pregnant. I spoke to him and told him I would like my child to have his eye color since I never had it. She came with blue eyes and blond hair. I cried my eyes out because I knew he heard me! He came to me in my dream to give me a date; I birthed her on the date he gave me. They’re always with us." Similarly, @rebeccajk_ said, "I’m going to hug my parents so so hard tomorrow. Thank you for sharing this. Moms are magical. As a new mom now myself, I understand how deep the love goes. Let’s pass on our mom’s love to our daughters."
