Sometimes help arrives in the most unexpected ways possible. Just ask content creator Abbie Herbert (@abbieherbert). While filming a routine vlog late in her pregnancy, she absentmindedly scratched her hands on camera. Her followers instantly flooded the comments, asking her to call her doctor. Skeptical at first, Herbert took a closer look, noticed tiny broken blood vessels on her skin, and messaged her doctor, prompting an emergency delivery at 37 weeks. She later opened up about the whirlwind experience on TikTok on December 18, 2025, and revisited the moment, thanking her followers on October 6, 2026, attracting over 312,000 likes.

A routine daily vlog

It all started when Herbert decided to step outside her normal filming routine in December last year to document the final stretch of her third pregnancy every day. During an early vlog, she casually scratched her hands without thinking much about it. However, her viewers reacted quickly, filling her comments with urgent warnings about cholestasis, a potentially life-threatening liver complication, advising her to contact a physician if her palms or feet felt itchy. Initially, she brushed off the concern, admitting, "I was like, no, this like is nothing."

Following a home photo shoot later that week, Herbert sat down and noticed a visible rash across both palms. The skin was not overwhelmingly itchy, but it looked as if broken blood vessels covered her hands. Remembering the remarks from her followers, she immediately took a photograph of her palms and sent it to her doctor. They then called her back instantly and insisted, "We need to do some blood work on you," she later revealed.

The alarming test results

The next day, Herbert got the lab test results that revealed dangerously high bile acid levels. Her doctor quickly followed up to confirm that the team was going over what to do next. Within a few hours, they called her back with explicit instructions telling her to get to the hospital because they were going to operate on her. As it turns out, the situation had worsened so much that the doctors had no other option but to do a C-section that very day.

Herbert had intended to spend that day shopping for baby supplies, but the sudden diagnosis changed everything. Because bile acid spikes can rapidly threaten the baby and placenta, the doctors ordered an immediate delivery at 37 weeks. Medical staff were amazed that her condition was caught without severe itching, telling her, "You have someone watching over you because that is a true miracle." The mother of three will always be grateful to her viewers who saved her and her baby's lives.

Mother affected by cholestasis

That being said, occurrences like these are rare. According to the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, 0.3% to 0.5% of all mothers suffer from cholestasis. While the risk of a woman being diagnosed with this is rare, it still poses great risks to mothers who are diagnosed with it. It increases the chances of spontaneous preterm birth, meconium staining, and intrauterine fetal demise. If the mother develops rashes as Herbert did, doctors may look at other pregnancy-related skin conditions, including atopic eruption of pregnancy, polymorphic eruption of pregnancy, and pemphigoid gestationis.

A lesson for future mothers

With Herbert sharing her experience with cholestasis, Herbert helped several other upcoming mothers check for it. @bellashoker05 commented, "When you posted about it, it was the first time I ever heard of cholestasis. I was diagnosed with it at 36 weeks pregnant; induced that next Monday." At the same time, @nicolegiraldol shared, "Because of you, I told my doctor and was induced + c-section at 38 weeks pregnant. Never heard of it before that; my baby is now 7 months old."
