Jokes and pranks are only funny when they don't harm or offend the person on the receiving end. Unfortunately, the person behind @thea.ctiveworld, a now-deleted account, thought it would be funny to play a pre-recorded Apple Pay-style transaction sound and claimed he had taken $10 from Walt Z, a Red Baron worker. What was supposed to be a "prank" turned into a tense confrontation about how people make money off of other people's humiliation and frustration. Thankfully, netizens were more than ready to make up for the cruelty by rallying behind Z. The clip was reposted by AmericanPapaBear (@AmericaPapaBear) on X, and it had more than 13,000 likes, 1,600 comments, and over 2.2 million views.

'I need it'

Walt Z was restocking the shelf at a store when the prankster came up to him to ask for the time. Z took out his phone to check, but the prankster pretended to take $10 from him. He even played the Apple Pay transfer notification sound to make it convincing. Initially, Z was confused and asked what the prankster was doing. The latter responded, "Dude, thank you, bro. I just took $10." Z told him not to mess with him, but the prankster insisted that he "needed it to buy something real quick." Z explained that he was not in the mood for his shenanigans, but the latter continued the prank. Finally, Z asked, "You think this is funny?" and then realized he was being recorded. He went to find a store employee to report the prankster to.

'It's not that deep'

A few seconds later, Z was seen speaking to an employee, but the prankster poked at him when he said, "Thank you for the $20 man, I appreciate it." That was the last straw for the father who four. Z suggested they go outside and the prankster responded, "Are you for real bro? It's not that deep... It was just a joke." An employee tried to diffuse the situation, but Z responded, "No, it's not a joke to me. My life is hard enough as it is. I don't need this c---."

Z, visibly emotional now, said, "I got kids at home that went to bed without me right now. I was supposed to be off an hour ago, and I'm still out here, working! I gotta wake up at 5 in the morning and do 10 more stores!" He was yelling when he added, "Now, I'm probably gonna get kicked out of the store because of you." The prankster muttered an apology, but Z said, "No, you're not sorry. You got a smug look on your face... You’re probably making money off of this! I can’t even pay my goddamn mortgage!" After Z's outburst, the prankster left.

Heartfelt support

Luke Oakenshield, a random man who is a stranger to Z, started a GoFundMe account for the Red Baron worker. Oakenshield wrote, "The worker tried to explain that they work extremely hard and that what was happening was not funny, but they were laughed at and treated like their feelings did not matter... There is real concern that this hardworking person could lose their job because of a situation they did not create." The fundraiser went viral, and he has raised a total of $464,792 (at the time of writing) out of $700,000.

Also of note is that a spokesperson for Red Baron's parent company told The Post they were aware of the incident involving Walt Z in August, adding, "Following the incident, we connected directly with our team member to check on his well-being, and we continue to offer our support. We are pleased to share that he is doing well and remains a valued member of our team." Red Baron Pizza's X account also had a special post for Walt Z: "He’s still here. He’s got a fan club. Including us."

Not a fan of pranks

Americans are not big fans of pranks. A June 5, 2018 YouGov survey found that only 6% of Americans loved pranks, while 34% disliked them, and 22% hated them. As for being filmed without consent, a 2024 Pew Research Center survey discovered that746% said taking a photo or video without asking was rarely or never unacceptable. Walt Z clearly objected to being turned into the subject of the prank and filmed for content.

'Wannabe influencers'

The majority of netizens were on Z's side and they understood why he was angry. @unfilterered commented, "I don't use Apple Pay so I have no idea how payments works. That little s--- told the guy he stole 10 bucks from him and then thanked him for the $20. Of course the guy lost his temper. There's nothing funny about working your a-- off for your family and some douche coming and telling you he just robbed you and while laughing." @therinfrench43 added, "If you think this man is in the wrong you are the problem with society. And you need to wake up, raising kids just to poke fun at others who are working through the s--- in their life they've been dealt with because a------- like you raise kids with no real discipline."
