'To the highs and lows, I’ve cherished every moment,' the retiring police officer's last words leave everyone in tears.
Retirement might feel like a dream come true — no more early mornings, exhausting work meetings, or looming deadlines. However, soon enough, most people start missing the little things that had been part of their daily routine for years. Needless to say, retirement, a bittersweet experience, comes with a mix of emotions — newfound freedom, relief, and an unexpected emptiness. Likewise, Keisha Huff's (@keishahuff23 on TikTok) father, Greg Fugitt, a now-retired police officer, experienced similar emotions on his last day of service.
After 29 years of service, when Fugitt informed his family about his retirement plan, his daughter, Keisha, felt like she was losing a part of herself — the identity of being a proud police kid. However, she knew her dad absolutely deserved the break since he had worked too hard for nearly three decades, Keisha told PEOPLE. Notably, on the last day of service, Fugitt and his daughter went to pick up his granddaughter from school in his squad car for one last time. Later, when they reached the police department, Keisha captured her father's final call as a cop, which was with his beloved wife. Fugitt, who was clearly emotional on the phone, said, "After 29 years of wearing this badge with pride and 14 years as your chief, the time has come to hang it up. It has been an honor to serve this community."
Further, Fuggit expressed his gratitude to his team members and thanked them for the memories that would always be a part of his life. "To the highs and lows, the victories and losses, I have cherished every moment," he added. Moreover, Fuggit went on to thank his beloved wife for everything she had done for his tenure. He said, "To my wife, Kelly, thank you for an amazing career, support, patience, and your love through every long shift." At this point, Fugitt could no longer control his emotions as he broke down in uncontrollable tears. With a trembling voice, he continued his final call, thanking his family, colleagues, and others who played a vital role in his career.
Interestingly, Fuggit's granddaughter, who was sitting right beside him, was also struggling to hold back her tears while watching her grandfather's emotional final call. Understanding her dilemma, the now-ex police officer held her hand and kissed it, as if assuring her that he was fine. Meanwhile, @jessheibert commented, "It sounds like his wife and daughter are still a part of the force, and he's retiring. I think that is great! It's not sad. We will be kind of sad that he won't be working with his staff." Similarly, @ryanjmic wrote, "It’s beautiful to watch officers do this. I remember when my dad made his final call after 25 years, and it was so emotional and amazing to watch."
@allicat052576 pointed out, "That’s the sweetest video ever! Love how he grabbed her hand and kissed it in reassurance! Thank you for your service!" @romeromero3 confessed, "It's not so much the last call but that girl's tears and facial expressions that make this so heavy & meaningful. The silent tears speak more loudly than the call itself."
@__mumlife__ said, "Love this! Watching from Australia. I went through this, and watching the child cry showed a lot! Then the wife did the final call, which was a lot! Bless you all." @kelseymikels commented, "Oh, baby girl, wish I could hug you. Please be blessed that his last call is that he is alive and well and retiring. My momma's last call was at the graveyard. Keep your head up and enjoy retirement. Thank you for your service."
