Guy tried to tip $0 on his pizza pickup order — but the app wouldn’t let him check out without a ‘valid’ tip

The app expected a minimum tip of 15% ($1.35).

Tipping culture has often drawn flak from people around the country. While some argue that tips are the only way workers in the US can make a decent living, the tipping culture has gotten out of control lately, largely due to its push towards forcing customers, even if they did not like the service. Sharing a similar ordeal on November 7, u/dottm expressed their displeasure at a pizza company that did not let them complete their pickup order without leaving a tip.

Sharing a screenshot of their online order, u/dottm revealed how they had ordered a pizza for $9, but during payment, it redirected them to a "Don't forget to tip" section. The app expected customers to tip ranging from 15% ($1.35), 20% ($1.80), 35% ($3.15), and a custom amount. "I tried to hit custom and put zero, and got an error to enter a valid tip amount. How can it be a tip when I don't have a choice? Well, I did have a choice and went elsewhere," the author wrote. It is bizarre that one should be forced to tip for labor they're doing themselves. If there is no 'server' on a pickup order, then who are we tipping really?

Tipping culture has often been discussed by researchers over the years. A 2023 report by the Pew Research Center found that about 72% of U.S. adults believe tipping is expected in more places today than it was five years ago. The study also revealed that only 34% of adults find it "very" or "extremely" easy to know how much to tip in different situations. The Reddit user's story reminds us of a TikTok user, BÜELI (@buelistic), who was refused service at a restaurant after she and her friends chose not to tip "enough." The video posted by the creator showcases the group being told they couldn't be served unless they left a tip, despite the customer noting she normally does tip. The outright cold behavior and entitlement, however, led her not to.

After the post went viral, many online users shared their views. u/cdb230 wrote, "There are a few things to try. Delete everything and enter 0. Try entering a negative value. Try 0.001. Those things sometimes work because people forget to do input validation on websites." u/RazzleDazzle1537 commented, "I would ask them to assist you so they could go through the whole awkwardness." u/px4855 shared, "That is the portion of the website that tells you to order pizza over the phone or go somewhere else." u/balanced_crazy wrote "Oh I would have held the god damn line… and turn around and said, 'I apologize I am trying to pay but the machine is erroring out… it might take me a while…'"
