Making money is essential, especially for international students who are often short on funds. That's why we often see young adults working various service industry jobs. However, landing a job as a server or dishwasher can be tough due to high competition. u/pooBUTTthegreat shared a story about a restaurant requiring job seekers to submit resumes and cover letters for these positions.a

A woman shared that she was helping her brother screen applications for his restaurant, but the process was surprising. They were hiring a server and a dishwasher at $19 an hour. Applicants didn't specify which position they wanted, making it difficult to sort through. "Considering how badly people need work, you'd think there would be some effort put into the application process," she said.

The woman was stunned to find that the job posting required a cover letter and resume. Out of the first 50 applicants, only 3 sent both. Fifteen sent just their resume, and 32 sent neither. Some wrote only a sentence or two, often with grammatical errors. One person provided just their phone number. "I am blown away by the poor grammar, spelling, lack of capitalization, punctuation, and use of texting language," she continued.

"My name was in the job posting but multiple people called me 'sir' or 'to whom it may concern.'" About 39 applicants at the restaurant were international students from India or Nepal and one applicant even asked specifically to be paid in cash if they bagged the job." the post read. "I just wanted to share this partly because I had no idea it would be this bad but also to tell people who are looking for jobs that you need to put in some effort. These 50 applications were received in the first 36 hours of posting. I expect there will be hundreds to look through."

She wished that the applicants had read the instructions carefully in the job listing and had put some effort into specifying the job position they were applying for. "If you make it clear how your experience is relevant and ensure that your communication is free of grammatical and spelling errors, you will be ahead of 99% of the applicants," the post concluded. This left the Reddit community debating over the necessity of resumes and cover letters for minimum wage jobs which only need a person to have relevant skills. Some even mocked by writing hilarious fake cover letters.

u/Xiao1insty1e joked, "I hate capitalism but I'm desperate for money. I can wash dishes. Probably without setting anything on fire. I will drink on the job and you are not allowed to talk to me." u/push1double commented, "Cover Letter: I am a board-certified dishwasher and I have an extensive history in the removal of dirt from plates. I majored in cutlery at college and my mom says I always had a special interest in how glassware dries. Please accept my application for CEO of Twitter."

u/polksallitkat added, "Scraping food stains off dishes brings me joy in this life. It gives me purpose, which is better than money or benefits. I'm sure the silverware sloshing in the sink will sound better than any symphony. In this job, I hope to be paid well enough to develop a crippling drug habit to while away the hours of my life, standing on concrete in $20 shoes. I look forward to perpetual dampness and the scent of vegetable oil being my only perfume. I hope to one day, cry on your toilet and scream in your walk-in."
