As the saying goes, "To err is human," and we are all bound to make mistakes at least once in our lives. Especially when we step into the real world as adults, we often find ourselves at crossroads that require us to make the right decision. However, we are prone to go wrong at least once or twice due to poor decision-making skills. What matters the most is that we learn from them and refrain from making the same mistake again. One common avenue where mistakes happen that everyone can relate to would be managing finances. The freedom that comes with adulthood might sometimes create a certain irresponsibility in us that drives us towards pointless spending of money.

Most people would agree that, at some point in their lives, they were tempted to spend their precious money on something that seemed captivating at first glance. But soon, life slaps our wrists and makes us realize how silly and irresponsible the expense was. Buying a ridiculously expensive piece of clothing or footwear only to let it gather dust in the wardrobe or paying upfront for a service that we would never use are some examples of this. So, when a Reddit user asked about the "dumbest thing ever" that people had spent their money on, many shared their regretful experiences. Here are 25 things that people felt were worth spending on but later realized how wasteful it was.

1. Go-Pro camera

My Go-Pro camera 10 years ago. Turns out, I don't live the exciting life I thought I did. -u/zippyboy.

2.  Property on the Moon

I got given a voucher for a iwantoneofthose.com about 15 years ago and could find nothing I wanted, so I now 'own' a square kilometre of the moon. -u/FulaniLovinCriminal.

3. Pricey shoes

A pair of Christian Louboutin stilettos that I absolutely could not afford and paid for with my whole credit card limit. I wore them twice. They are indescribably uncomfortable, the soles are paper thin, and the red scrapes off pretty much immediately if you wear them outside. I was young and clearly very stupid. -u/tummyache-champion.

4.  A pointless degree

I got my degree in audio engineering right before everyone stopped buying CDs and the music industry completely changed. So, that. -u/Wishilikedhugs.

5. Danny Devito cut-out

A life-size Danny Devito cardboard cutout. I use him as a seasonal decoration so right now, he's wearing a flower crown. In the winter, he becomes a Christmas tree. -u/skulloflugosi.

6. Gym membership

I paid upfront for a four-year gym contract. The price was mind blowing. I went only once in four years, my own fault. -u/thatcompguyza.

7. Average-tasting fast food

Honestly, fast food. I always crave a specific thing and buy it and then it’s just ok. Why did I spend $20 on burger and fries? I could have just gone home and made it better for cheaper. -u/Sea-Air-3193.

8. Wedding

My wedding. We are now divorced so I feel I could have used that money for something more worthwhile. Lesson learned. -u/verltodd.

9. Videogame cash

Once, just once, I purchased in-game cash with real cash in a videogame. I felt dirty afterwards. Never again. -u/MegawackyMax.

10. Porsche

A Porsche. Because midlife crisis. -u/Dolphin_Princess.

11. Re-election fund

You know that box on your tax form that asks for $1 or $5 for the presidential re-election fund? I checked it. Once. -u/Commercial-Novel-786.

12. Diet plan

A diet program that cost a fortune. Ended up binging on pizza instead. -u/Iriscze.

13. Mascot costume

Once paid $900 for a Meerkat mascot costume. I don’t know why. It’s been in storage for like 10 years. -u/BisleyMLBTS18.

14. Trundle bed

A trundle bed. I hated it after a week. That was a whole waste of $350 dollars. -u/Erin-renner54.

15. Tiny mineral

I collect minerals. A few years ago, I bought a tiny specimen of putinsite for $60, but when it arrived I realised it was so small I couldn't see it. So I bought a $600 stereo zoom microscope. Now I can see it. -u/Bbrhuft.

16. Virtual diamonds

I got sick and was stuck in bed and out of boredom wound up spending money on diamonds for the game Choices. I don't know what possessed me to do this. I guess it did entertain me for half an hour or so but I'm still ashamed. -u/MarlenaEvans.

17. An elliptical machine

An elliptical machine that had games in the console. The games looked like Atari Pong. It was awful, huge, heavy and expensive. I used it five times. -u/DuperDayley.

18. Soup Tureen

A soup tureen. I thought a married lady who throws dinner parties and fancy brunches just had to have one. Finally found the perfect one, bought it (expensive!) and put it in a cabinet and never used it, not even once. Turns out I’m too control freaky to serve from a tureen — have to plate the soup so I can get the swirl of sour cream or truffle oil or scattering of minced chives just right. Kept the tureen for a few years then took it to my cousin’s annual yard sale. It didn’t sell. -u/Missus_Aitch_99.

19. Beyblades

As a then 27-year-old, a bunch of Beyblades and some Beyblade arenas. Shockingly expensive. But whip those bad boys out at a Halloween, Christmas, or any other party and watch an actual pit form around the arenas as grown men and women jostle for their turn to let it rip. It's like the ethical man's gladiatorial combat entertainment. -u/The_Bababillionaire.

20. Overpriced jeans

$40 on a pair of jeans and belt just to get into a club with my friends. Never wore them again. -u/Dee_Breeze.

21. Rookie card

Bought a Tiger Woods Rookie card for over $1,000 in the late '90s. Full sheets of uncut cards hit eBay and prices plummeted to less than $50. Still stings. -u/how_is_this_relaxing.

22. Lottery tickets

Lottery tickets. My sister is right when she calls them 'a tax on people who are bad at math.' -u/CarlSpencer.

23. Door Dash

Getting pizza delivered by Door Dash from a place that would take me five minutes to walk to. -u/One_Entrepreneur_181.

24. Lightsaber

£300 Jedi Lightsaber I've hung in my room. I don't turn it on ever. -u/springroll1321.

25. MS Office subscription

It's got to be my Microsoft Office subscription. I haven't used that in years. -u/TheStoicbrother.
