'She kind of stole me away from Regena,' Rafferty recounted.

Before the text message and social media era, people who had friends living in other states or countries had to connect one letter at a time. Mike Rafferty was 14 years old when his teacher introduced him to a classroom pen pal program at Saint Gabriel School. He wanted to be friends with a 14-year-old girl from California. In 1984, Rafferty received a letter from Christie Leonard, her name written in bubble letters. Since then, the two teenagers began a friendship that consisted of sending photos and letters back and forth, but they never met until 42 years later. CBS Philadelphia shared the story on September 23, 2026. Its YouTube video garnered over 301,000 views, 2,500 likes, and 250 comments.

Philadelphia to Orangevale

Mike Rafferty told the news outlet that it was his friend who wanted a 14-year-old girl from California to exchange letters with, and he followed suit. The program assigned Regena Jauregui as his pen pal, and he received his first letter on June 1, 1984. But when Christie Leonard, Jauregui's cousin, heard about the program, she wanted to write to him too. "She kind of stole me away from Regena," he said. Over the years, Rafferty and Leonard wrote several letters and sent photos to each other, all the way from South Philadelphia to Orangevale, California.

'You're from Mars'

As the years went by, Rafferty became a professional boxer, and then worked as a police officer. He married his wife, Razel, and had four children. The two friends lost touch a couple of times but reconnected again. Finally, in September 2026, Leonard said that she was visiting Philadelphia with her fiancé and asked Rafferty if he wanted to meet. Rafferty agreed. When she got there, he showed her an old football photo and asked her to spot him. 42 years later, she pointed him out of a throng of high school football players. They fondly recalled the letters and the phone calls over pints of beer. Rafferty also told Leonard how his family reacted when she was on the phone, "My whole family is hanging over me like you're from planet Mars. 'Michael's talking to somebody from California,'" they said.

The beauty of pen pals

Rafferty and Leonard's pen-pal friendship stood the test of time and survived. Postcrossing, a postcard exchange platform, conducted an informal poll of its users in 2018, collecting 8,351 responses. About 32% said they currently had pen pals, while 33% had had them in the past. Another 24% had never had a pen pal but wanted one, and 11% had never had one and weren’t interested. Fortunately, even after losing touch a few times, Rafferty and Leonard managed to reconnect with each other and finally met after four decades of friendship.

Several netizens commented on the beauty of letter-writing and the feeling one felt when a letter arrived in the mail. @chriswhit44 commented, "They both seem like genuinely nice people, and they both look great for their ages." @dustinderolph2277 wrote, "Wait, so they started doing this at 14, and now it's 42 years later, so they are 56? They look great for their age."
