Imagine taking your usual morning stroll through the local park, and suddenly you spot something unusual on a bench: a note about which you cannot stop thinking even years later. This became a reality for a Reddit user (u/sits79) who spotted a bouquet attached with a handwritten note on a bench while walking through Holland Park. They decided to take a picture of the note and the bench, and despite it being left there over a decade ago, they wanted to know the story behind it.

A 'freak accident'

Ever since the passerby clicked a photo of the heartbreaking scene, the moment would keep popping up in their phone's 'Memories' carousel. Curious but having no other recourse, they decided to ask the Reddit community for help and posted the pictures 11 years after they were originally clicked. "To my boy who died here 25 years ago in a freak accident. He was two and a half, and I loved him with all my heart," the note read. The photo, clicked in mid-October of 2014, would keep popping up in their mind every year around the same time. However, they couldn't reach out to the person mourning the death of their child until the internet seemingly uncovered the person the flowers were dedicated to.

Tragic news from 37 years ago

According to Openbenches.org, this bench is in loving memory of Geoffrey N. Cooper, who died near Holland Park at the young age of 2, following a tragic accident on January 10, 1989. Although the details of this tragic incident remain unknown, without a doubt, it must have been hard for the Cooper household to deal with this loss. And so, they did everything possible to honor his memory. Grieving the loss of a child is as difficult as it can be, and data shows more people go through it than we assume.

Children at risk

According to the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), at the present moment, a total of 15,000 children under the age of five die daily, and an additional 60 million will die between now and 2030. Moreover, Sub-Saharan Africa accounted for 58% of all under-five deaths in 2024, while Southern Asia represented a further 25%. Children in fragile and conflict-affected settings are nearly three times more likely to die before their fifth birthday than those elsewhere.

This is truly heartbreaking to see. Despite the UN making so many efforts to save these lives, recent conflicts have made things worse for the children. That is exactly why the note, which was seemingly written by another grieving parent, seemed to have struck a chord with Reddit users, who were trying to console and extend their support to the family of the child. "Oh wow, you can feel the pain and sorrow in that note, devastating," u/Embarrassed-Depth-27 wrote.

"One time, me, my partner and child were in a little playground. I found them looking at a plaque by a tree, commenting about how sad it was because it was for a little girl. I wandered over and said, "Yes, I knew her. Died just before her 10th birthday of leukemia. They had her party a few days early because she had a big dose of medicine and was feeling well. They still leave flowers for her on her birthday — what must be 35 years later. You don't get over losing a child," u/Psimo- stated.
