Passenger who stood up to entitled mom and her unruly child finds support on the internet

The mom chose to coerce the passenger into giving away his drink rather than disciplining her kid.

Parenting involves inculcating values such as basic courtesy among the children and teaching them how to behave with others in public spaces from an early age. Being seated next to an annoying child on flights or buses isn't uncommon, but things get worse when parents theselves lack the basic civility to be able to correct the child's behavior. Recently, a passenger u/Mr_Coco1234 shared a horrible experience he had while flying back from Dubai, involving his co-passengers, who were an unruly child and an entitled mom. As soon as the man saw the mother-son duo, he knew it was going to be trouble.

He started off explaining, "This kid, who must have been around five or six, was running up and down the aisle, throwing toys and making a mess." His mother was oblivious of the child's shenanigans while the flight attendants were having a hard time managing the little one. "About halfway through the flight, I ordered a Coke. As soon as it arrived, the kid zeroed in on it. He started whining and pointing at my drink, making a scene," the man added.

He expected the mom to discipline her kid for asking for another person's drink, but he was taken aback by her reaction. "The mother was giving me these dirty looks like I was some kind of demon for not sharing my Coke with her prince. She leaned over and, in a tone that dripped with arrogance, said, 'He really wants your drink. Just give it to him,'" he explained. Responding to her surprising demand, he suggested she order one by herself as the drinks were free. "She huffed and rolled her eyes, muttering something under her breath," he pointed out. Frustrated by her reaction, he decided to be as petty as he could. "To spite her, I ordered another coke but this time her kid tried swiping the drink from the attendant's hand," he said.

Eventually, the mom was told off by the flight attendant to control her unruly kid. "For the rest of the flight, she kept glaring at me like I had snitched on her to a principal, while her kid continued causing problems," the man mentioned. "It's amazing how some parents think the world revolves around them and their poorly behaved children. Why have kids when you can't parent them properly?" he asked. This post sparked outrage against the entitled mom for not teaching her kid the right behavior, while some argued that this situation could've been handled differently.

"I’m not understanding why the flight attendant didn’t give him a Coke when he tried to take yours out of her hand. I would think she would de-escalate the situation," said u/Longjumping-Pick-706. "If they were free, I think I would have ordered one and then asked the flight attendant to hand it to the mother," added u/Whole-Ad-2347.

However, most people sided with the man for teaching the mom a lesson. "It makes no sense why she didn't just ask the flight attendant for a coke for her son. To demand that a stranger give up anything for an unruly child is absolutely horrible behavior," said u/No-Pack5931. "As a teacher, I will just go ahead and say- it’s typically the parents and not the kids. What an entitled, rude, lazy and delusional human. I love how you handled it!" lauded u/Loughraw. "We see it every day and everywhere, mothers so engrossed in their phones paying no attention to their out-of-control children. What the children need is discipline, just like their grandparents should have done to the mom," chimed in u/Appropriate_List6605.
