The family made passive-aggressive comments about the co-passenger and called him selfish

From crying infants to unruly passengers, almost every traveler has a frustrating story to tell. On July 6, an individual who goes by u/crimsonthread22 on Reddit recounted how a family of 4 tried to get them to swap seats on a flight. The author refused because they'd paid extra for an aisle seat. However, it did not sit well with the entitled family, as they made passive-aggressive comments, calling them selfish.

The author admitted that the extra fee they paid for their seat was not much, but it wasn't free either. When a woman insisted they swap seats so her family could sit together, they considered it at first. But then the author realized they would have to sit in a middle seat, 20 rows behind, and politely refused. Five minutes later, the woman's husband approached the author and asked again to switch seats. "He said I was 'one person traveling alone...' I told him I understood, but I'd specifically paid to reserve that seat. He rolled his eyes and went back," the author recalled. The entitled family did not give up. They again sent a flight attendant to convince the author.

The author asked if they would get an aisle seat in exchange or be reimbursed for the extra amount they paid on the ticket. The flight attendant denied; so the author also refused to swap seats. Dissatisfied, the family spent an hour on the flight making passive-aggressive comments about the co-passenger. At one point, one of their children asked why they were not seated together, and the parents replied, "Some people only think about themselves."
In 2026, PhotoAiD surveyed 1,095 Americans about airplane seats and found that 92% were asked to switch seats in the last 2 years. While 84% who agreed to swap instantly regretted it, 26% swapped because they felt pressured. The survey also showed that the most common reason for agreeing to switch seats is to help families sit together (35%), a reason the author did not succumb to. Now, while wanting to sit together with your family on a flight is natural, people shouldn't expect other passengers to sacrifice for them.

People supported the author in the comments, saying that if the family wanted to sit together, they should have done what the author did and paid extra for their seats. u/G-reeper66 commented, "NTJ. It is not your job to resolve an FA's (flight attendant) job. Personally, I would have told the dad that proper planning and preparation prevent p*ss-poor parenting performance. Or he can pay you $500 cash to swap!" u/dogwomancali chimed in, "The fact that the parent said, 'Some people only think about themselves' was over-the-top hypocritical. And the fact that the parents clearly didn't have the self-awareness to realize this means they are raising idiot children who will grow up to be hypocritical, selfish adults, just like their parents. Sheesh."
