A lot of people take impulsive or unexpected decisions because they are in a helpless position. Many times, it could also be that the decision is well calculated based on circumstances. A woman who goes by u/revolutionary_alien shared a post revealing that she chose to keep her first purchased house a secret from her parents. Unfortunately, the family found out and showed up unexpectedly to create chaos. When she shared the backstory of her problematic childhood, the internet knew she was right to withhold the information. However, one more logical factor urged the 32-year-old to conceal the news of her home from them.

The woman explained that since a young age, she had a “strained” relationship with her parents. Due to excessive favoritism, her sister was always prioritized, and it affected her bond with her parents. “Over the years, our relationship has had its ups and downs, but I would never describe our family dynamics as being particularly normal or healthy,” she explained. She left home as soon as she could when she grew up. At 23, she got married, but even then, their behavior towards her didn’t change. On the contrary, they ill-treated her husband too. “When he and I visit their home, he is subject to the same expectations as I am,” she mentioned.

A short while later, the parents moved, and the couple was happy with their distance. They kept in touch but ensured to steer clear and avoid drama. The woman then mentioned that she planned to grow her family with her husband, and after much waiting and effort, they were able to move one step closer to this dream by purchasing a home. “My parents are kept on a strict information diet, and we did not tell them that we had bought,” she noted. While one reason was to avoid their unwanted jealousy and negativity, there was one more logical factor. The parents had rented a storage unit close to the new place, and if they knew, they’d want to hog the excess space there, too.

They learned about the home after the woman’s childhood friend brought it up in a conversation with them. Since she was invited to the place, she asked the parents to join too, and as soon as they arrived, they were frustrated. They began yelling at their daughter for hiding the news and even called her selfish. From the heated conversation, one thing was clear: as she expected, her parents wanted to use the space for storage and were upset she didn’t reveal it to them. “Ultimately, my parents left after telling me that a true daughter would never keep secrets like this,” she mentioned.

According to a WalletHub survey, Americans are hush-hush about their finances, even with partners and family members. 42% of Americans reportedly have financial secrets. Around 1 in 3 people lie about their money and wealth to their partners. But there are mixed ideas about having a secret stash. 1 in 10 Americans feel financial infidelity is worse compared to emotional or physical infidelity in a relationship. On the other hand, 66% of people said having an emergency fund that partners are unaware of is a good idea. 72% of Americans say that it is necessary, for different reasons, to keep financial secrets.

42% noted that they have hidden or lied to their parents about their finances. This rank was highest, indicating the majority lied to parents compared to other family members. This could be for reasons like hiding debt, bills, job status, or even withholding information about large purchases, income, and so on. While reasons are often different and sometimes even personal, in this woman’s case, it seemed pretty logical, according to the internet. u/Nevyn-57 wrote, “You didn't inform your parents of the purchase for all of the reasons that proved to be true. All they wanted was to use you as a storage facility.” u/NO-Stubstance6082 added, “The reason your relationship with your parents has been so much better recently is BECAUSE you have boundaries on what information you share with them due to their behaviour.”
