All she wanted was 90 minutes to prioritize her health and her parents refused to help

Grandparents are usually the first people parents turn to when it comes to caring for their kids. Miel (@miellarino) thought she could do the same. She texted her mom and dad to babysit her kids on different days of the week, so she and her husband could go to the gym together. She thought they would be excited to spend time with their grandkids, but their 'yes' came with 'conditions.' Since Miel was their only child, she wished their roles were reversed so they could feel what she was going through. The post was shared on July 29, 2026, and it received 2,900 likes and 2,700 comments.
Miel texted her father first and asked him to babysit the children. He responded with "one condition." Her house needed to have a "clean kitchen... clean sink, no dishes lying around, no clutter on the counters." Miel responded with, "I guess you won't be coming then." She texted her mother and asked if she could come a little later than the usual timing. Instead of saying yes, her mother brought up the fact that Mondays were supposed to be her days ever since she retired. She added that ever since her retirement, Miel "needed me more and more." Miel was hurt that her mother guilt-tripped her for how much she needed her. What made it worse was they lived 10 minutes away, and driving to her house was not a hassle.
The reason why Miel needed to go to the gym was that she had gestational diabetes during both her pregnancies, and it was turning into Type 2 diabetes. She needed to lose some weight to remain healthy. Her parents knew that, but they refused to pitch in and help. In one of the comments, Miel let out her frustration, "I guess they should have had more than one child if they wanted a caregiver in their old age. I'm too busy enjoying my life with my children, the entitlement!" She believed that caregiving is a two-way street. Parents care for their children, and vice versa. It made her wonder if she should show the same kind of attitude towards her parents when they needed her later on.
Unlike the relationship between the Miels' parents and their grandkids, most believe grandchildren are a gift, and most grandparents agree. A 2024 National Poll on Healthy Aging found that 72% of older individuals reported hardly feeling isolated because of their grandkids, compared to 62% of those with no grandchildren. The older individuals were also involved with caring for their grandkids. 20% cared for their grandchildren (under 18) at least once a week, while 8% cared for their grandchildren every day or almost every day.
People had mixed opinions in the comments. @the_audacity_of_man commented, "I can't imagine not jumping at the chance to have regularly scheduled visits with my grandkids. Especially if I was retired. I'm sorry your parents aren't more supportive." @kappybook wrote, "I guess that you don’t get to experience going together. Sometimes you don’t always get what you want."
