Adopting animals is a common practice, but most people tend to ignore older dogs when they visit pet shelters. This is understandable as they may have many health issues, which can be problematic for first-time pet owners who are relatively inexperienced.

After spending 700 days in a shelter, one fortunate senior dog saw his dream come true when a 74-year-old grandmother, Jeanette, adopted him.

Beluga, the dog, was taken in by Austin Pets Alive! in 2022 due to various health challenges.

His condition was dire, as he was blind and suffered from arthritis along with several other neurological issues. However, Beluga did not let any of these setbacks get to him and managed to win over the shelter staff's hearts with his lovable attitude.

Despite his special needs making him a less ideal adoption choice, the dedicated shelter team created an Instagram page, @adopt_beluga, to boost his adoption prospects.

Fast forward to February of 2024, when Jeanette arrived at the shelter to meet another pup. The grandma had lost two of her senior dogs the previous year. While she had no idea about Beluga, the wonderful dog managed to get her attention. Jeanette knew how to take care of older dogs and after getting to know Beluga, knew she could not leave him behind in the shelter. She adopted the dog and took him to his home, where he was renamed "Velcro" because he was always by her side.
