'I'm glad someone cared, cause parenting is not at all easy... '
Parenting is often an overwhelming cycle of endless tasks, and it becomes even more challenging when you're caring for sick children. One mom, u/MoistMayo0, was feeling that exhaustion firsthand. She had been tending to her sick kids all day, and when her youngest asked for Panda Express noodles, it felt like one more thing she had to do. But what happened next, thanks to the kindness of the Panda Express staff, turned her night around.
In her post, the woman explained that she had tried to place an order online but failed. "It kept saying that it couldn't be delivered to me or there was a payment issue. I was so frustrated. I didn’t want to make the drive, but finally decided to suck it up and go," she explained. When she arrived at the store, it was busy for a Sunday night. She placed her order for five large chow mein, a two-item combo, and two large meats. Just then, an employee interrupted her. "[She] and told me that a family dinner would save me money and give me the same amount of chow mein," she wrote.
The manager noticed and stepped in with a better suggestion. "She stopped her and said it would be more beneficial to do a tray of chow mein and then a family meal," the user recalled.
The manager’s suggestion resulted in more food, including an additional meat substitution for one of the chow mein portions, and the final bill was $30 cheaper than the original order.
"I thanked all of them profusely. I told the manager that my kids were sick and all they wanted was the chow mein. She smiled, said she understood, and was glad she could help," she said. When the user got home, she discovered that the manager had added two extra sides of chow mein and about 30 cookies to the order.
Overwhelmed by this simple yet meaningful act of kindness, she reflected, "Sometimes I feel so lost, like I’m drowning in parenthood, and her small act of kindness meant so much to me. I'm teary-eyed even typing this out." She ended up writing a letter to Panda Express corporate to express her gratitude for the extraordinary service. "Thank you, kind stranger," she concluded, feeling deeply moved by the generosity. While the thoughtfulness of Panda Express alleviated the woman's exhaustion, it's no secret that parental burnout is a real concern. A study surveying over 17,000 parents in 42 countries found that parental burnout in the US is among the highest in the world.
As the post gained attention, many Reddit users shared their own thoughts on the impact of small acts of kindness, particularly during the difficult days of parenting. u/Perfect-Ad2578 commented, "Wonderful story and can completely understand how someone just caring a little bit can make a world of difference. Single dad and had those moments where any help without having to beg makes such a difference." u/BePassion8 wrote, "Thanks for acknowledging this random act of kindness. The world desperately needs more of this." u/oscarish added, "I'm glad someone cared, cause parenting is not at all easy, particularly in those days. It doesn't take a lot of effort to make a difference in our lives."
