'Optimism in the face of adversity is a powerful thing.'
Getting laid off from a job can be very hard on a person, but consistent support and encouragement from their loved ones can help them get through it. Katrina's mother's words after she got laid off from her job had an even greater impact on her than she realized at the moment. Katrina, who goes by @edgykatrina on Instagram, shared that she listens to her mom's message from that day every time she feels sad, and it works some magic on her mood.
When Katrina got laid off, her mom told her, "You know what, it's a blessing in disguise. Time to move on and do your own thing." The mom pointed out that she had always encouraged her daughter to work full-time as an entrepreneur. "But you wanted that safety net, right? You don't need it." The woman went on, "You are good. You are doing really good. It's good, all good." She even went as far as to congratulate her daughter for what was going to happen next in her life, which made both of them laugh. "Anytime I am sad, I think about my mom's response to me getting laid off," the text overlay of the video reads.
Laid off 6 months ago, Katrina said, "But I think about this phone call a lot! I figured if this makes me feel better, it might make someone else feel better, so I wanted to share it with you! Shout-out to my mom!" According to a study by the University of California, Berkeley, layoffs can lead to loss of work associations, daily structure, financial safety and more. Even though the job loss happened due to a budget cut, it can deeply impact a person's self-esteem. Sharing one's feelings with family and loved ones can help the person regulate their actions and stay motivated, per the source.
People appreciated the mom's words and shared their own similar experiences in the comments section of the video. @amandaoleander wrote, "This reminds me of when I got laid off in 2015 from being E Entertainment's illustrator. I loved the job and the safety net, but it was indeed a blessing in disguise. I’ve been self-employed ever since. Living my dream. Wishing you the best of luck! Go for all of your dreams, your time is now." @authorlarissawrites commented, "When my child's daycare facility closed this year, I became a stay-at-home mom and full-time author. My mother-in-law said pretty much the same thing to me! Optimism in the face of adversity is a powerful thing."
@alisa_mna remarked, "Omg! Manifesting this for me, I also just got laid off, but hated my job, and I was miserable. So I feel good now mentally and excited for my next chapter." @magnolialoves expressed, "This is beautiful. I hope everyone in this lifetime receives this kind of love, support and encouragement from their parents." @susanhchang shared, "When I was laid off for about 6-7 months (tech winter 2023), I found myself iceskating a lot. And I discovered a brand new part of myself that I wouldn’t have been able to see with the 9-5 corporate grind. I was ice-skating upwards of 4 hours a day alongside yoga, pilates, recovery, and other things. It was during that blessing in disguise that I found myself."
