Olivia Rodrigo saw video of first-generation student struggling to pay tuition and quietly sent her $5,000

Despite the enormous impact of her gift, Causey kept this a secret for over a year because she didn't want to destroy something that meant so much to her.

When most students step onto their dream college campus, they picture late-night study sessions, football games, and the simple thrill of earning a college degree. But for University of Alabama senior Jamie Causey (@jamiemcausey), her college experience was far from enjoyable. Instead of relishing her time at the university, she was worried about how to finance her final semester. Things became very stressful for the first-generation college student, leading her to vent on TikTok. She didn't seek help, just wanted an outlet. To her surprise, her video caught the attention of Grammy-winning artist Olivia Rodrigo, who reached out with a special gesture. Causey revealed this on her Instagram on 18 August 2026, garnering nearly 900,000 views.

An unexpected DM

The bond began when Rodrigo contacted Causey on her birthday. Shortly after that, Causey released a video in which she shared her difficulties with fitting in at college and financing her education. She stressed that during that time, she "wasn't asking people to pay for it or seeking pity." Causey just wanted to be open about her struggles and her journey as a first-generation college student. Millions of people related to her in this clip, including Rodrigo, who then initiated a private conversation with Causey. She told her that she felt like a true "source of positivity and light."

'I watched your last video...'

Talking to her, Rodrigo offered some support. "I watched your last video about tuition, and I'd love to help out if you were open at all to that. So cool that you are so close to graduating!" she wrote. Overwhelmed by the generous offer, Causey shared her details, and within no time, the pop star's management stepped in and transferred $5,000 to clear her remaining college balance. Despite the enormous impact of her gift, Causey kept this a secret for over a year because she didn't want to destroy something that meant so much to her.

'You made me feel like I belong'

With the financial hurdle removed, Causey finished college. It was only after she graduated from college that she decided to share Rodrigo's heartwarming gesture with the world. "Olivia, I don't know if you'll ever know how much that means to me. You made me feel like I belong on this platform," she said. Nonetheless, beyond Rodrigo's help, Causey, in her video, also revealed several other influencers and celebrities who reached out to her and extended their support. That's why she concluded her message by urging people to engage in random acts of kindness whenever possible.

Cost remains a major barrier

That being said, what Causey had to go through is something thousands of adults experience, especially first-generation college students. In fact, according to a Lumina Foundation survey, 56% of people who have never enrolled or have enrolled in college report cost to be the most important factor in their decision to not pursue their degree. Meanwhile, a striking 31% of students currently enrolled in universities report considering stopping their studies because of financial restraints. This clearly shows how huge a barrier cost is for students.

That's so amazing

This is a huge reason why people were impressed by Olivia Rodrigo's incredible gesture. @andyxmillier commented, "I got to meet Olivia at an event for the premiere of her Vampire music video, and she was by far the kindest, most down-to-earth celebrity I’ve met. 10/10 human!" Meanwhile, @ducky_508 wrote, "As a fellow first-generation student, struggling tooth and nail to pay for my final semester in law school- I really relate. What a blessing! So glad you received the support you needed."
