Her motive remains unclear, but some believe she planned it all just to get into prison

On April 10, an elderly woman walked into a bank, handed over a note demanding money, and carried out a robbery all by herself — but what she did next left people far more confused than the crime itself. Instead of running away or trying to hide, she went straight to the police, as WVTM 13 News reports.
The incident occurred at 9:03 AM, when the unnamed woman entered the Regions Bank on Odum Road and passed a note demanding money. Once the person in charge had handed over the cash, the senior 'robber' went to Gardendale Police Station and submitted all the cash. While not much about the case is public, the police believe the woman acted on her intuition alone. A spokesperson for Regions Bank told WBRC that the woman, who remains unidentified, harmed no one, even though the building was packed with people.
As soon as the cops were alerted, they informed the lady's caregiver and took her into custody. However, according to the latest reports, charges are pending. Moreover, Regions Bank is apparently cooperating with the Gardendale police department, assisting the investigation. The FBI in Birmingham is equally involved in the case.

Although the motive behind the woman robbing the bank remains unclear, some believe she planned it all just to get into prison so she wouldn’t have to take care of herself anymore. A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center across American citizens found that more than half (54%) of respondents aged 65 or over work mainly because they want to. However, 17% of respondents work because they can't afford to retire and stay at home. Another survey (by AARP) found that 20% of senior adults (over 50 years of age) have no retirement plans.
Likewise, more than half of respondents (61%) of older people are concerned about not having enough money to survive after retirement. The same survey found that 37% of older people are so scared that they believe they might even struggle to cover necessities such as food and shelter. Over a quarter of respondents fear the burden of covering family caregiving expenses, while 70% express concern about prices rising faster than their income.
Meanwhile, reacting to the bizarre story, @bigrw commented, "My first thought is that she's getting old, less able to take care of herself, and prison is her retirement plan." @aquariusgrace said, "I was thinking she was testing reflex times and security standards." Similarly, @troxy56 wrote, "Well, at least she went to the police right away. Sounds like she is not of sound mind."
