Guests at a lavish wedding were left shocked by unexpected divisions during the reception, leading to the groom’s mother’s emotional reaction.

Weddings are such rare occasions when everyone on the guest list expects special treatment. Even though the day is momentous for the bride and the groom, those invited may still want to fully take part in the celebrations. From decorations to bookings, to extravagant displays through outfits, food, and yes—the giant cake—it’s an overall expensive affair. However, one “rich” couple's hack to save some money has landed them in trouble, according to a widely circulating post on Reddit by u/gew114.

The anonymous wedding guest accused the bride and groom of segregating guests during their reception. Additionally, the individual, who belonged to the groom’s side, was invited to the event only to eventually find out it was a no-fun show. “I’ll start this off by saying the groom’s family is extremely wealthy and paid for the wedding, ‘no expenses spared,’” he wrote. Moreover, the groom was described as someone very “stubborn,” likely to have refused his parents' involvement and only accepted their money.

Notably, the reception was held at a venue two hours away from the individual's hometown, prompting the now-unhappy guest to book a hotel room before heading out for the celebrations. The ceremony was fine until the cocktail hour was set up in the blazing sun, he added. Furthermore, there was only a bar with a single bartender, making it difficult for around 150 guests to get their drinks.

“Not a single hors d’oeuvre was being passed around. We then entered a large plastic tent where the dinner was to take place,” the post added. During the afternoon, at around 3 p.m., the sun was still blazing hot, and the guests kept complaining about the dead heat of summer. With very little room for ventilation, they somehow managed. Moreover, the guest said he was asked to join the family friends at a table far from the bride and groom.

It took almost three hours to serve lunch, which was supposed to be a seven-course meal; however, one course was missing. When the guests seemed excited about the main course, it turned out to be “four slices of steak shared between eight people.” Appalled by the hospitality, the guest further claimed that only two bottles of wine were dropped off for each table, and the bar was also closed during dinner. At this point, the family friends started noticing that “the ‘very wealthy’ guests at the wedding had been given a lot more, including high-end wine bottles, scotch, and tequila.” They were being served a plethora of additional food, the person elaborated.

The wedding ended on a “sweet note” with the not-so-rich guests being served Oreos and apples instead of dessert. Following this, the individual shared, "Grooms's mother left in tears because of how ashamed she was ashamed of how the majority of the guests have been treated." The horrific marriage experience has sparked reactions on social media. u/Embarrassed_Hat_2904 questioned, “‘Apple slices and Oreos?’ Was this a wedding reception or after-game snacks?” “These are things my 7-year-old can help herself to at home. I can’t imagine leaving the house for such a fancy feast,” u/NDC-not-covered remarked.
