At some point, the woman realized that her work as a nurse wouldn't be very sustainable as she grew older.
Although a career switch could go either way, it yields brilliant results for some individuals. If planned well, it might help a person find the kind of life they are looking for and make a living at the same time. A nurse who switched careers to buy an old laundromat feels that changing her career to become a laundromat owner was a really good decision. Cami—who goes by @laundromatgirl on TikTok—took to the platform to share her life as a laundromat owner.
"I've owned this laundromat for four years," the text overlay read as the former nurse entered the laundromat and showed people around. "I quit my job as a nurse a year ago," she shared. The woman collected quarters from each machine and emptied them in a bucket. She explained, "I now work 10-15 hours a week and make three times more than I did as a nurse." She visits her laundromat two to three times a week to collect the quarters and pick up the cash instead. "Buying my business was the best decision I ever made," the business owner pointed out. In an interview with Newsweek, the 37-year-old revealed that she had been a nurse for thirteen years. The woman worked as a bone marrow transplant nurse.
Her shifts would start at 5 a.m. in the morning and end at about 8 p.m. at night. She loved certain aspects of her job but thought that doing that kind of work in her fifties and sixties would be quite a difficult thing. "I distinctly remember looking at other nurses I worked with who were my mom's age, and I refused to be doing this job when I was their age. Working as a nurse is too hard, stressful, and hard on your body to do it for a long time," Cami recounted. She started looking at alternatives that don't require further education in 2020 and finally found a laundromat and bought it for $300,000. "I remained working as a nurse for the next three years while owning it, so it was very difficult to manage both schedules at the same time."
"I also started pickup and delivery services six months after buying it. This is where we drive out into the community, pick up laundry and bring it back to the laundromat, where my employees will wash, fold, and then return it a few days later. This side of the business now brings in more revenue than the original self-serve does," Cami disclosed. "The pickup and delivery took a long time to grow and was a leap of faith that it would work. During the time of growing it, I was at my laundromat every day and was often helping fold laundry to make sure the deliveries would get out on time."
"Some days after working at the hospital, I would go straight to my laundromat and fold laundry and wouldn't get home until midnight. Since my business has grown and I've been able to hire a really great team, I now work about 10-15 hours a week. I go to my laundromat twice a week to collect quarters, pick up the cash and check in with my employees," Cami continued. People took to the comments section of the video to express their opinions. @mamabre_4 wrote, "This reminds me of the show 'Shameless' where Fiona buys a laundromat." @bchlife4me commented, "Owning a laundromat is my dream." @dani remarked, "I've been looking into a laundromat for years. I just need the funding."
