Woman was furious over her neighbor’s 'midnight bowling.' Then she met the 87-year-old behind it

'Down comes Carole...'

Woman was furious over her neighbor’s 'midnight bowling.' Then she met the 87-year-old behind it

When someone is nursing a fresh heartbreak, all they crave is quiet, especially in a new home meant to be a fresh start. Heidi Widmer (@omgitsheidiii), however, got none of that. Night after night after moving to her new apartment, she lay awake, seething as the floorboards above rattled with thuds that sounded like bowling balls crashing down. After some time, she was ready to confront whoever was hosting the 'midnight bowling league' robbing her of sleep. But anger quickly turned into heartbreak when she met the culprit in the hallway. She was none other than her 87-year-old neighbor, Carole. Upon further investigation, she found out Carole was suffering from Parkinson's disease. What unfolded next was beautiful, ABC 7 reported on August 19, 2026.

Racket in the rafters

When Widmer packed up her bags in Buffalo and moved to Los Angeles after a divorce, she thought she would get some much-needed peace. The middle school teacher and influencer, however, soon realized that might not be the case. On just her first night in her new apartment, she couldn't sleep, hearing all sorts of thuds rattling the ceilings throughout the night. She described the sounds as if somebody "just took a bowling ball and went over and over." Nonetheless, she expected this to be a one-time thing, but the racket didn't pause.

A chance stairwell encounter

That continued, leaving Widmer furious until three weeks later the mystery broke open right outside her door. "Down comes Carole, a British lady with Parkinson’s, struggling with three bags of recycling," Widmer told PEOPLE. It was then it hit her that the bowling ball sounds she'd been hearing for the past few weeks weren't actually bowling sounds. Rather, it was Carole's walker. Realizing this, she immediately offered to help the old woman get her trash to the bin. This was just the start of their lovely relationship.

The sad reality hits Widmer

Following this encounter, Widmer decided to head upstairs to see if Carole needed anything else. Stepping inside, she saw the reality of the old woman's life. The space was deteriorating and neglected. She recalled, "Her quality of life was just... it was so sad." Carole, due to her Parkinson's diagnosis, could no longer keep up with the apartment on her own. When asked, Carole further revealed that she hadn't had any help for a long time. "Hey, Carole, you got family?" she asked her in one of her social media posts, to which Carole replied she didn't have any.

@omgitsheidiii thank you from the bottom of my (& Carole’s) heart(s) for showing us the same kindness I showed her 2 weeks ago similar to Carole, i feel my life is about to change in all the best ways… my life was shrouded in darkness for years. if only you knew how much your support means to me🥺 this is my promise to you: bi-weekly reel updates on Carole & our journey together & daily story updates on the ins & outs of my & Grandmother Carole’s everyday lives🫶🏽 thank you for being here, thank you for seeing me as i am, & thank you for changing our lives forever🥹 #myneighborcarole #leadwithkindness #kindness #neighbors #caroleandheidsidebyside ♬ original sound - Heidi

Giving the home dignity

It was then that Widmer took it upon herself to lend a hand to her elderly neighbor. The 35-year-old took action right away. She contacted the landlord to bring the space up to standard. The upgrades came fast. They secured a new fridge, a new stove, air conditioning, and even fresh carpeting. At the same time, Widmer scheduled multiple deep-cleaning sessions to clear out the grime, noting that her job is still not done, as she continues to share the journey on social media. Additionally, she also set up a GoFundMe for Carole, which has raised over $81,000 to help.

@omgitsheidiii just a friendly reminder from the internet’s grandma to treat your neighbors with care! after all, it takes nothing to lead w kindness🫶🏽✨ lol in all seriousness, hope you get a kick out of our banter🤣 we share so many laughs together & im so grateful she’s my LA fam🥹 #myneighborcarole #caroleandheidsidebyside #neighbors #parkinsons #grandmacarole ♬ original sound - Heidi

An unbreakable family bond

The care stretched far past the apartment walls. Carole, who has asked to not show her face to the cameras, revealed that she's also got a personal makeover. Widmer treated her to a fresh hairstyle and a manicure. She now affectionately calls Carole her adopted grandmother, saying she simply wants to be a "beacon of light and pillar of kindness for her." This story has struck a chord throughout the United States, with Widmer receiving letters from all across the country lauding her for her efforts.

Parkinson's impact on life

Carole's story showcases the difficulties people suffering from Parkinson's disease have to face daily. According to ParkinsonsDisease.net's 2020 online survey of 1,472 people, 71% reported fatigue and 47% reported sleep issues in the previous month. Among respondents who experienced fatigue, 73% said their motivation was lower when fatigued.

This is the reason why people have been praising Widmer so much while also reflecting how society works. @jagenv commented, "Crazy you can reach that age and society can just forget about you. This lady got lucky to find someone caring." Meanwhile, @petrinamiller7331 noted, "This is why I’m happy there are kind people out there for the elderly whose family just leaves them to die when they get to a certain age and don’t care! She’s a true miracle to this woman’s life!"
