The mother-in-law rolled her eyes and went, 'Really? Around me?'
For most women, the intimate act of breastfeeding is a beautiful experience that strengthens their bond with their baby. After birth, breast milk is the only form of nutrition babies need for their overall well-being. Considering its importance, ideally, there shouldn't be any shame attached to breastfeeding—whether done in public, at home or anywhere. However, not everyone understands it and often calls out the mothers for prioritizing their children's needs over anything else. One such similar incident was highlighted when a new mom, u/iii-hall-2953 on Reddit, shared how her simple act of breastfeeding her newborn baby made her mother-in-law uncomfortable.
The woman had recently given birth to a baby girl and had been regularly breastfeeding her. Once, her mother-in-law arrived at her residence on short notice while the new mom was fully engaged in household chores. "She picked some things from our garden and chatted with me and my husband. She sat down and started watching the news on the TV," she shared. Everything was going smoothly when the baby began showing signs of discomfort, perhaps because she was hungry. Looking at the baby in distress, the woman pulled down her top and started breastfeeding her. "My mother-in-law swung her head to me and gave me a look. She huffed and said, 'Really? Around me? I'll just get naked too and have it all hanging out, huh,' and rolled her eyes at me," the mother revealed.
Notably, this wasn't the first time her mother-in-law did something like that. The woman recalled another incident where she made a similar remark that forced her to take her baby into another room. However, this time, the new mother didn't let the incident slip and immediately confronted her mother-in-law. "I just pulled off my top and stood up right in front of her and told her, 'I'll feed my baby when I want in my house.' She just stared at me, and I added, 'If you don't like it, you can leave.' I sat back down, and she said, 'I can't believe this girl,' and got up and left," she revealed. After her mother-in-law left, her husband informed her that she had texted him about the incident angrily, but the woman was too tired to think about it.
Meanwhile, u/mileyxmorax commented, "She needs to f*** off. She can watch the news in her own home. And if your husband doesn't get a spine, I'd send him packing to his mommy too." u/infinityynovaa wrote, "Totally with you on this! It’s your home, and you shouldn’t have to deal with that kind of negativity. If she can’t respect your boundaries, she needs to back off. And your husband needs to step up and support you; it's important for him to have your back in this. You deserve to feel comfortable in your own space!"
u/avid-learner-bot pointed out, "Your mother-in-law was being such a hater. I'm so done with relatives who think they can boss us around about parenting decisions. Next time, just tell her to f*** off if she can't handle seeing you breastfeed in the comfort of your own home." u/raerae6672 shared, "She showed up and invited herself to stay by sitting and looking at the news on your TV in your house. There was absolutely nothing wrong with what you did. Your husband needs to grow a pair and put her in her place."
