Not everything needs an update — some things are just better left unchanged. And that's precisely what a paralegal (u/hayescaroll) at a mid-sized litigation firm realized when a new hire (the author called him M) called out their trusted filing system. But what he believed was a trailblazing attempt to fix the "outdated" approach ultimately backfired in front of a client in the worst possible way. The paralegal shared the story on April 20, which has received over 2,000 upvotes on Reddit. 

The paralegal was responsible for creating case files, managing documents, preparing trial binders, and making sure they didn't miss deadlines. The author was good at their job, and so nobody ever questioned their process until M joined the organization. With a degree from one of the top law schools, he was undeniably smart but had no experience working under pressure. During their case prep meetings, M often commented that their filing system was "outdated" or their indexed discovery documents were "inefficient compared to how they did it at his internship." After doing it several times, a partner asked him to lead the discovery (evidence exchange before trials) for an upcoming case." The paralegal provided him with the documents, the chronology, and everything he needed.

On the day of the deposition, the opposing lawyer asked for a set of emails from a specific date. Now, this was a standard request that would have taken the paralegal 3 seconds to find using the previous system. But M, who had organized the documents by topics, not dates, took 11 minutes to find what the lawyer asked for. "The client said nothing during the deposition. But they called the partner directly that evening," the author recalled. That particular incident left M embarrassed in front of the client, and since then, he has been obediently taking notes without ever interrupting the paralegal's case prep sessions.

Workplace changes can bring about a shift in employee attitudes. According to a report from Eagle Hill Consulting, 63% of American workers said that they experienced a change in their workplace in 2024; however, 34% said that the changes were not worth it. According to Melissa Jezior, the president and CEO of Eagle Hill Consulting, "Organizations are introducing important changes but failing to bring employees along on the journey. When employees experience increased workload and stress without adequate support during change, that ultimately impacts the effectiveness of change efforts." The survey also revealed that 45% of the workers said the changes increased their workload, 43% had higher stress levels, and 62% said their manager did not reduce their workload, so they could take time to learn and adjust to these changes. A small percentage (24%) of workers said the change was done in a way that made it easy for them to adapt at their workplace.

Netizens were glad M was not fired, but also applauded the author for allowing M to learn through his mistakes. u/baekseoulhui shared, "I'm a court clerk, and I've seen this so many times in court. Brand shiny new lawyers who haven't been in stressful situations yet. We had one ask if they could continue because he didn't ask a witness to be at the trial. Like, sir, you know about this date months in advance. Why did you not send out your subpoenas? [The] Judge was not happy." u/unitedexpression6 advised, "Don’t ever get cocky about your system though, it can have improvements, small or structural, now or in the future."
