Neighborhood clashes are destructive for both parties. What starts as a trivial issue, like a barking dog, an overhanging tree, or a parking problem, escalates into a vicious cycle that slowly ruins relationships. In a June 16, 2019, Reddit post, a person (u/gustavotherecliner) shared how a newly arrived neighbor became determined to force his family to remove a 120-year-old orchard from their property. Her relentless complaints sparked a feud that ultimately backfired when he uncovered permit violations that resulted in a massive bill she couldn't afford to pay.

Orchard of the fantasy

The person had a 120-year-old orchard in their family house, existing since their great-grandparents' time, who were quite proud of its peach trees. Each year, when peaches were harvested, they would throw parties and share peaches with the neighbors. Towards the south of the orchard were neighbors who loved it just as much. One of the neighbors, an old man named Sam, was a good friend of the person.

Often, they spent time having whiskey together or learning woodworking with hand tools in the workshop, a small timber-framed building that stood at the border of their house. Since the workshop was at least 160 to 180 years old, it couldn’t be taken down without special permission, according to a law that protects old structures. Failing to get permission could result in a fine. Anyone who wished to take down an old building was also required to obtain permission from the surrounding neighbors. Any building constructed in place of the old building could be regarded as illegal without these permissions.

Enter the villain

About 10 years ago, from the date of the post, Sam passed away due to cancer, and his wife died soon after that. That’s when things started tumbling down. A woman named Karen shifted to their house and soon enough started messing things up with the neighbors. At first, she asked the person to remove the peach trees that were invading her property. Then her recurring complaints prompted the author to stop hosting peach parties.

If that wasn’t enough, the woman started pestering them to remove the orchard. "Somehow the tires of our trucks got slashed, eggs got thrown on our farmhouse, our cat disappeared and surfaced a few days later in pretty rough condition," the author wrote. The person and their family were sure that Karen was involved in these acts, but they couldn’t prove it due to a lack of evidence.

And then came Karen’s most obnoxious move. She called a company to remove the old workshop. Little did she realize that she failed to ask for her neighbor's permission. She was charged a hefty $437,000, including the fines for not getting permission, a fine for her new building, and the cost of rebuilding the old workshop. Karen went bankrupt and had to sell the property, which the person’s parents bought right away.

Tales of pestering neighbors

According to a survey by YouGov, three in 10 people reported being pestered by their neighbors. People reported responding to this pestering in different ways. 26% politely asked the neighbor to be mindful of their acts, 22% complained to the police or higher authorities, and 8% decided to settle the score by confronting their neighbor with a heated argument. Another survey, conducted by Lemonade, revealed that more than half (52%) of Americans report feeling frustrated with their neighbors multiple times in a year.

Justice served

Reddit readers wrote positively about the post, defending the person and reflecting on how the culprit, Karen, must be suffering from her own bitter medicine. u/Aidenkitsune remarked, “Sadly even having it rebuilt just wont be the same, how you can just tear down history like that is a real shame.” u/ununseptimus said, “Justice is served. It's going to take a million gallons of essential oils to make Karen feel better!” u/The_undying_lord said, “I'm sorry, but if I'd found one of my cats in that condition I'd have killed her.”
