Petty neighbors pretended not to be home after accepting a wrong delivery — but forgot to hide the evidence in their own recycling bin

Most people start counting down the days the moment they get the out-for-delivery notification, but for a person (u/astronautslothphd) who'd ordered some groceries, that excitement faded when the delivery driver sent them a picture of their package. Well, that's because as soon as they saw the photos, the person realized the package had been delivered to the wrong address. Realizing the genuine mistake, they knocked on the family next door, hoping to get back their groceries. But what happened next left the author shocked by just how petty their neighbors could be. The post, shared on August 4, 2026, has garnered 12,000 upvotes.

Grocery mix-up

The entire ordeal began with the person, who is currently unemployed, hoping to end the week on a high note with affordable groceries, including fresh vegetables. They were excited about the delivery and wanted to unpack the package themselves. However, that turned out otherwise when they received an email with pictures attached to it from the delivery driver. The pictures revealed that the boxes had been delivered to the wrong house. "My wife looked around and couldn't find it," the person noted. However, the author recognized the backdrop as the house across the street.

So, as soon as they got home, they went to their neighbor's house to retrieve the package. "I rang the doorbell (fancy Ring doorbell with camera) and then knocked," the author said. Interestingly, the individual said they searched outside their neighbor’s house for the packages but couldn’t find it anywhere, suggesting that someone had already received it.

Caught in the trash

The next day, while heading out, the author noticed something sticking out of their neighbor's recycle bin. Upon closer inspection, they found two large boxes. "Our grocery box was in there, address label and all," the person recalled. As it turns out, the family next door had received the groceries but pretended not to be at home. Thankfully, since it was a mistake from the company's end, they refunded the amount, but the author was furious, as it wasn't the first time their neighbors had done something like that.

The anxiety of waiting

While the author may have been surprised by their neighbor's pettiness, package theft isn't that rare. In fact, about 1 in 4 Americans (64 million people) have at least once in their lifetime experienced package theft, according to Security.org. This is why 62% of people feel anxious waiting for their packages to arrive, with about one quarter feeling moderate to severe anxiety regarding their package getting stolen. To counter this, 46% of people schedule deliveries when they are home, while 34% have installed cameras on their doors. 

'Publicly shame them'

Nonetheless, people in the comments had their own views on the entire situation. For example, u/jerf42069 noted, "Well, now you know your neighbors are thieves, and that's good information to have." At the same time, u/Alternative-Park-841 had other ideas: "I'd publicly shame them to all the neighbors. Even ones that I don't know. I'd walk up and down the block knocking on doors to let everyone know what that neighbor did," they noted.
