I used my neighbor's own violations against him because I was angry at him

"I was still angry that he'd put her through the hassle in the first place," the narrator said, explaining why they decided to report their neighbor. A couple of days after he first reported their mom to code enforcement, they started investigating his property. "I found potential issues with the setbacks and easement requirements, so I reported them to the city," the narrator confessed. Soon, the investigation revealed other violations, including permits and electrical work. The neighbor was then forced to tear part of his deck. He was even ordered to stop work and address the violations first.
“I wasn't just concerned about the rules being followed. I wanted to get back at him for going after my mom,” the author confessed. Although a pang of guilt struck them, they made peace because everything they reported was a legitimate violation. “I still feel like he brought the situation on himself,” the author added. They also confessed to not telling their mom about their involvement. In a FindLaw survey, 42% of Americans admitted that they have been in a dispute with their neighbor. Surprisingly, 18% of disputes were regarding "visual nuisance, the property's appearance, trash, etc." While 49% discussed these disputes with their neighbors, 27% reported them to law enforcement — just like the neighbor in the Reddit post.

The internet flipped the author’s guilt by assuring them that the neighbor must have had scornful motives when he complained about their mother’s fence. For example, u/CheapCrayons said, “I mean, karma hits us all. Besides, you probably helped them prevent a fire in their own house for bad wiring. Your revenge could have saved their life from their own stupidity.” Similarly, u/Objective-trust4505 added, “One of my favorite sayings in these types of situations is ‘Now imagine if you had just minded your own business.’ Sucked in to him.”
