Inflation is real, and expecting a single job to pay all your bills is, in fact, another illusion. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 8.9 million people in America are working multiple jobs to sustain themselves. Now, this means that nearly 1 out of every 20 workers has more than one job, something that was last seen during the 2009 economic crisis. The hard-hitting truth about more and more people juggling multiple jobs was once again highlighted when Kelly, a NASA engineer, posted a video (now-deleted) of her getting ready for an interview at Tiffany’s.

Despite having a degree in chemical engineering and a primary job at NASA, people were amazed to see Kelly trying for a second job. "I am a NASA engineer, and I’m applying for a part-time job at Tiffany’s, and I have an interview in 40 minutes," she said in her video before arriving at a mall in Houston for her interview. In another video, which she later deleted, Kelly informed her audience that she got the job and was offered $20 an hour. However, the woman refused it after securing a part-time job at an Apple Store. When people bombarded the NASA engineer with questions about why she needed a part-time job, she clarified, "I like my job at NASA; we get paid well. I just want a little more money. I’m not looking for a new full-time job, but my rent is high, I have student loans, I have car loans, and I like to thrift a lot."

Moreover, she said that although she makes enough money, she loves to do fun things in life. "And also, I just have a lot of time right now, so I don’t mind working a little more so I can spend more." She also added that she was "trying to make money to visit my family more. They live in Wisconsin," Kelly added.

Living in the U.S. has become more expensive than anyone could have imagined a few years ago. Inflation leads to substantial price increases of everyday things like food and gas, making life extremely difficult. CNN reported that over the past year, prices have surged by about 6.2%, which is the highest jump in over 30 years. Meanwhile, reacting to Kelly's video, someone in the comments asked, "So even NASA doesn’t pay that well?" Chiming in, someone else added, "If someone at NASA needs a second job, I have no hope for my future." Another user on TikTok said, "I know y'all think NASA is cool, but it's a government job quite like many others that don't pay astronomically." An individual pointed out, "It's a federal position. Unless she's in leadership or has been around 15+ years, she's not making 100k+." As the video continued to gain traction, one more user joined the conversation, saying, "A NASA engineer needs a part-time retail job, yet people are still not taking the wage crisis seriously." One person commented, "Y'all, this is a pretty common thing to do. I work retail, and so many of my part-time co-workers have other jobs at places like Stanford University."
