Musicians used dogs’ tails as orchestra conductors — and it actually worked

There isn't a thing a dog can't do. Pedigree, the pet food company, confirmed it with their "tail orchestra experiment" in April 2024. Well, the company offered different treats to the furballs and had an orchestra play music to the rhythm of their wagging tails, according to PEOPLE. Pedigree posted the video on their channel, which is now private. However, you can watch the orchestral masterpiece on Marcelo Nogueira's (@nognogueira) YouTube channel.

Wagging tails for 'cues'

The experiment involving adorable dogs was filmed at Polish Radio. Musicians waited as volunteers brought furballs onto the stage and showed different treats like broccoli and Pedigree sticks, letting them express their feelings with their fast-wagging tails. "You take the energy and play the Greek," Marchin, the violinist, said, anticipating their performance. Similarly, Kamilla, another violinist, explained that they had to adjust their tune according to the wagging tails. For instance, she said, "When the tail went down, we had to play softer, or quieter."

The final masterpiece

The tail orchestra experiment turned out super successful, but it was, of course, not a piece of cake for the team. In fact, emphasizing the challenges, Krzesimir Debski, the Polish orchestra conductor, said, "Improvisation of the tail was sometimes very irregular." But in the end, he appeared quite satisfied with the result. "I think we are ready to record and play in Carnegie Hall in New York... maybe. Sorry, it's stupid," Debski joked.

The music turned out to be so good that the company released it on Spotify. Moreover, Pedigree, the pet food company, announced it would donate funds to the Pedigree Foundation for every stream on the platform. For those who are unaware, the foundation works for the welfare of dogs and helps those in need find loving homes.

Use treats to evoke emotion

Dogs express the majority of their emotions through their tails. In fact, according to a study by neuroscientist Giorgio Vallortigara, we can understand a dog's feelings only by looking at the direction of the wagging tail. If the furballs are wagging their tails to the right, then they are more likely looking at something they aren't scared of and are willing to approach — for example, their owners.

Similarly, if they are wagging their tails to the left, it means they are more likely to back away from a potential danger, such as another dog. This is exactly why the Pedigree team used different treats to evoke emotions in the dogs in the "tail orchestra experiment." They probably knew the dogs would definitely wag their tails seeing their favorite teams, thus offering a chance for the musicians to play music to their rhythm.

Viewers were mesmerized

The video was also shared by @visualspirits on Instagram, and people couldn't stop admiring the pure masterpiece. @m00n.childnyx commented, "The soundtrack of a dog's joy is the perfect way to describe it." On the other hand, @kaygravitt_ shared, "To be able to understand what notes to play based on the dog's tail is just beyond incredible." Overwhelmed with emotions, a grieving pet parent, @june_v_grey, confessed, "I am bringing my dog to sleep forever this morning... after 15.5 years together... hug me virtually, please. It is a very tough moment in my life in general, and this is just breaking my heart. Dogs are angels without wings."
