Calling attention to the hypocrisy of education system, the school failed to understand that Edward couldn't match the attendance of non-disabled children.
Meg, mother of a disabled child named Edward (@helpforedward), was forced to suffer the repercussions of his school’s ignorance. After she took her son for rehabilitation treatment, which was important for his recovery, the school filed a claim of unauthorized absence and refused to take down the charges. The event sparked outrage at the strictness of the UK's education system that penalizes families of disabled children with school attendance crackdowns and non-negotiable rules. Edward's mom detailed the incident on October 2, 2026, and it has since received 30,000 views on Instagram.
“Being threatened with a fine for taking my disabled son out of school for medical treatment,” Meg, the mother and a disability advocate, explained in her video. She expressed her frustration with the system, saying, "I am so unbelievably done with the systems built in the U.K. I just felt like they are set up to make disabled people and families of disabled children fail." Equality, she said, isn’t about treating everybody the same. Sometimes, it’s providing people with different support that they need for an equal chance.

The story began when Edward’s school charged Meg with unauthorized absence after she took her out for medical treatment. She had basically taken him to a “swim lab”— an intensive rehabilitation program for disabled children. Meg noted that it was “unbelievably important” for Edward to attend the treatment, which he also received the previous year, especially after he had a major hip reconstruction operation. Meg called the experience "incredible," noting that his son could walk from one side of the room to the other after attending the previous session. But this time, when she filed for his absence, the school refused to approve it, despite allowing his leave last year.
The school said that Edward’s attendance was supposed to match that of non-disabled students, which seems largely impossible and torturous to Meg. Given that the boy has to take medical appointments, physiotherapy, and operations, it is unfeasible for him to attend the school like regular children. She blamed systems like the government, the NHS, and the local authorities for not understanding her plight. “I don’t think they want children with disabilities to flourish. That’s how I feel. It’s like ‘us against them.’ Why is it like that?" Meg explained.
According to the Instagram bio, Edward suffers from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a genetic disease that causes muscles to go weak and waste away, per Cleveland Clinic. The disease damages and kills motor neurons, worsening muscle condition. Unfortunately, there are no cures for SMA, and the disease can only be alleviated through therapies and medications. According to the UK National Screening Committee, about 1 in every 10,000 babies in the UK suffer from SMA. That means about 70 babies are born in the UK each year with the condition. Meg also explained that when exposed to an illness such as a cold, Edward can have very different and drastic consequences than other children. “I don’t want special treatment for my son. I want his disability and medical needs to actually be taken into consideration,” she asserted.

Meanwhile, viewers sided with Meg and called for reforms for disabled people. @charlotteB_B commented, “This is illegal under the disability act. A swift letter from a lawyer should resolve this very quickly. The location is irrelevant, especially when you can provide proof and prior evidence. The LA needs to back off.” @cheri_22 said, “Meg, let them take you to court; there will be an army behind you! I am furious about this and the PE thing too!”
