The woman never planned to have six kids but now she is trying to make it work and seems to have it under control.
Teaching kids the importance of doing chores and helping around the house early on is something many parents want to do. However, it might not be the easiest thing to assign or keep track of. If someone is looking to divide the list of chores among their kids and ensure that they do it, a mom on TikTok has an interesting way to do it. The mom named Sharon—who goes by @sharon.a.life on the platform—shared how she divides the chores each year and people on the internet are taking notes.
As the video began, the mom sat at the dinner table in her fancy costume and asked her kids for a drum roll to start announcing their chores. She shared, "Every year, the day before school starts we announce what two chores each child will have for the whole year." The woman added, "This year we announced it at our FANCY-night-before-school feast. FANCY costumes and FANCY china were required." She told the kids how their dad would be in charge of the upstairs bathroom again this year. "Everybody say thank you, Dad, you did a very good job at that," the mom said encouragingly. The kids repeated after her, "Thank you, Dad, you are the best Dad ever."
Sharon shared that her family had been following the tradition for the past five to six years and it has worked really well. "Mom this year is taking on craft room responsibilities," the mom announced and the kid thanked her too. She started with her 14-year-old and said, "She's got a new one, she's gonna hate it." She explained, "Your chore this year is the porch and when it snows you have to shovel off the sidewalk and a pathway down to the road." Everyone cheered as the mom told the kid that she also had the living room. The next kid was assigned the trash and the downstairs bathroom. "Also, you guys need to start using the bathroom downstairs. You are also in charge of any redecorating that you would like to do."
She told the oldest two that she would give them a budget and they would have to figure out the redecorating. She informed her 11-year-old, "You have the dishwasher and the hallways again because you were so terrible at it this year." Her 9-year-old who was entering the fourth grade was asked to clean and maintain the TV room. The 8-year-old would, "have to clear and set the table in the morning and the evening." Sharon encouraged, "You'll be great at it, you'll be my helper." Both her 8-year-old and 9-year-old also had to do any random chores that the mom assigned. The 5-year-old was in charge of the entryway and helping mom with the craft room. Once everyone was assigned chores the mom asked for a round of applause and everybody obliged.
People took to the comments section to appreciate the brilliant idea.@macys_parade commented, "Small thing, but I love how you made the kid do hallways again after they were bad at it. My brother would always purposefully do chores badly so my parents wouldn’t ask him again." @life_comes_with_lemons wrote, "This is actually a great idea. No confusion. No asking whose turn something is. Expectations are set early." @anne.ain.pain remarked, "This is so smart. Giving the kids opportunities to master that particular cleaning/organizing skill before moving on to the next responsibility. Teaches them so much I wish I learned as a kid!"
@sharon.a.life Remember that I was never supposed to have this many kids. 😅 I’m not very good at it but we make it work and i really feel like I’m hitting my stride at figuring out how to make it work best for all of us…. At leats the house upkeep part 😂. We’ve now done this tradition of a nice feast and chore announcememt for half a decade and it’s a family favorite. Wearing fancy costumes was a hit and we’ll be adding that on for years to come. We had a fancy ninja, ninja, pirate and fairy as well which added to the magic and choas. It really ianpure chaos most the time but its also so much fun. I didnt plan or want 6 kids but here we are, making it awesome as best we can. ❤️ #bigfamily #momlife #kidchores #chores #familysystems #organizedhome #homesystem #choresystem #chorechart #momsover30 #funmom #newschoolyear ♬ original sound - Sharon.a.life
