When asked the reason behind her sudden disappearance, the mom of three blamed an ongoing domestic conflict

A woman has finally reunited with her mom 24 years after she went missing from North Carolina. Well, the incident dates back to December 2001, when Amanda Smith's mom, Michele Hundley Smith, apparently left her residence to go Christmas shopping but disappeared without a trace. For years, deputies did everything possible to track Michele's location, but nothing worked in their favor. However, the missing case took a turn in February when the Rockingham sheriff’s office received a lead about her whereabouts, The Guardian reported on March 28.
Over two decades after Michele went missing, detectives received new information about her case, and soon located her at an undisclosed location in North Carolina. The authorities immediately jumped into action and arrested her on February 25 in connection with an old DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) case from November 2001. However, the police released Michele after she paid the bail (bond) the same day. That's when she bumped into her now-grown daughter, Amanda, who pulled her into a tight hug. Viewers, however, expected a different reaction from the abandoned child.
Notably, when asked the reason behind her sudden disappearance, the mom of three told investigators that she left following an ongoing domestic conflict. However, when PEOPLE confirmed, the authorities ruled out prior official reports about any such problems. In fact, the investigators said they didn't find evidence of a crime that could have led to Michele's extreme step. "Oh, I know everything is not Black and White... There is a whole gray matter... Life's too short for me to hold a grudge against her because she's my mom," her daughter, Amanda, told reporters, reflecting on her emotional reunion with Mom outside court.
Amanda was only 14, her brother 8, and her older sister 19 when Michele had vanished. But Katie Gregg, the district attorney, said there isn't enough proof to charge Michele with anything related to her disappearance, such as abandonment, according to WFMY. After their heart-wrenching reunion, Amanda posted on her Facebook (now deleted), sharing her inner turmoil. She confessed to going through a mix of emotions and being torn between contrasting thoughts. "Will I have a relationship once more with my mom? Honestly I can’t answer that because I don’t even know... My initial reaction would be yes, absolutely, but then I think of all the hurt... But even then... My mom is only human, just as we all are," Amanda wrote.
Millions of kids are abandoned every year across the world. In fact, in the United States alone, a federal study found that annually, at least 22,000 children are left in hospitals by their parents, who are either unwilling to take care of them or can't support them financially. The findings of the shocking study commissioned by the Department of Health and Human Services were spread across mainly six urban areas, and Cook County (Chicago), Ill., New York City, and Washington, D.C., had the highest numbers of abandonment cases.
The study also found that 75% of these babies tested positive for drug exposure and were Black. Though Amanda didn't have to go through similar distressing situations, she, too, felt abandoned by her mom when she left home. But despite her struggles, she chose to forgive her, setting an example of love, resilience, and compassion.

People have a mixed reaction to Amanda's emotional reunion with her mom. While some resonated with her, others called out her mom for walking out on her daughter 24 years ago. For instance, @andreabrayboy commented, "This daughter has a beautiful heart. May God bless her." Similarly, @tlp223 wrote, "I feel for the daughter; she just wants her mom. Hopefully, she won't be hurt again." However, @sob98, who had a different perspective, shared, "Wow, this woman is selfish and is not a good person. Daughter deserves better and is probably really messed up because of this woman." @elettner said, "She wasn't missing. She was a fugitive, and she left her daughter behind."
