'I don't want to see you on the evening news,' the college student's mom confessed

A man called his mom to confess his love, but instead of reciprocating, she panicked and asked him a question he didn't expect. As part of a social experiment, Cameron Thorne, a volleyball player and the host of Love Dial (@lovedialshow), asked a college student to call his mother and say, "I love you." He agreed, accidentally turning what seemingly began as a wholesome interaction into comedy gold. The TikTok video was posted on February 5, and it has gained 2.5 million likes so far.
The man called his mom, but instead, Derek, his brother, responded from the other end. Moments later, he gave the phone to their mom, who sounded shocked by the call. "What happened?" she asked, only to hear her son say, "I was just calling to say I love you." Shocked, the mom asked again, "What happened?" almost as if she had never had her son confess love like that.
Instead of reciprocating, the mom was more interested in knowing whether he had only called to cover a mistake. "Are you about to get arrested?" she asked again, leaving her son embarrassed. While he tried his best to assure his mom that everything was fine, nothing convinced her. "You never just call to say, 'I love you.' You call when you need something," his mom said, accidentally exposing him in front of Thorne.

However, thankfully, towards the end, she realized it was just one of those days her son felt an urge to confess his love to her. "I love you too," she said before turning on full mama mode, giving her son instructions. "When you come home, could you bring home the plastic Tupperware?" she asked, assuring him that she would fill it with more cookies for him. As if the interaction wasn't funny enough, she ended the call saying, "I don't want to see you on the evening news."
As kids, our world revolves around our parents, but as we grow older, we tend to build our own lives, slowly letting distance take over. Emphasizing it, a poll by the Pew Research Center found that while 77% of respondents' parents reported an "excellent or very good" relationship with their adult kids, only 41% of parents confessed that their children rely on them for emotional support. Moreover, the survey revealed that with age, the contact between parents and their adult kids also starts to loosen. While 73% of parents text their kids at least a few times a week, only 54% confirmed talking to them on the phone or via video chat. The findings further explain why the mom in the TikTok video was shocked hearing her son say, "I love you," to her.

Meanwhile, people online had a hard time controlling their laughter. While some pointed out the mom's obsession with Tupperware, others mentioned her unexpected response. For instance, @_itumeleng_k commented, "I thought the Tupperware obsession was only an African mom thing. Moms really love their Tupperware." @monoclonalab joked, "Fact: parents worry when their daughter doesn’t call home and worry when their son does call home." Similarly, @hany_xxx wrote, "I love how he's not ashamed to answer her mom even with her questions, and he's so firm yet soft with his answers. He was raised right!"
