The mother showed her daughter how they used to do makeup in the 90s and her reaction to it was epic and hilarious.
People who grew up in the 90s are often hit by the reality that songs, fashion, and trends from their era are as old in this day and age as the 70s were for them. Although certain hairstyles and apparel such as bootcut jeans have made a comeback, 90s kids are struggling to keep up with Gen Z trends. These days, people follow a number of steps to do makeup, which was not the case in the 90s. Dawn, who goes by @haywardlegends on TikTok, and is a mother to a Gen Z daughter, showed her how they used to do makeup in the 90s, and her child was horrified after seeing it.
The mom started by applying foundation to her face using her bare hands in the video captioned, "Showing my daughter how makeup was done in the 90's." Meanwhile, her daughter, Lillie, who was behind her, tried smudging the foundation using a brush, but Dawn, ignoring that, went on to use a highlighter stick on her eyelids and then drew pencil-thin eyebrows. Lillie was seen disagreeing with what her mom was doing with a horrific expression.
Lillie also tried to point out that the highlighter stick must be used on her nose. Not paying heed to her suggestion, Dawn applied a blue eye shadow on her eyelids and used a brush to apply a blush on her cheeks. Her daughter once again offered her a color palette for blush, but Dawn didn't use it.
Lillie was in disbelief when her mom just put lip gloss on her lips and applied lip balm over it. She then put hoops on and tied her hair into a loose pony towards the right. The video, which has garnered nearly 29 million views on TikTok, is captioned, "We were so careless with our skin!"
People in the comments shared what they thought about the mom's makeup. @richardmurphy commented, "90s makeup technique - just lather everything and hope for the best."
@catwithnolegs wrote, "It was so fast. I miss that speed level." @richellokitty expressed, "Zero blush - blush was considered '80s' and we didn't wanna look like our moms." @steadygoinggreen shared, "Okay, the eyeshadow... not quite that careless, but the foundation application?" @painfullyawkward said, "She needs to see actual photos from the 90s to prove how crazy we were!" @lucy.jones3 commented, "This is why I just use a BB cream now because I just slap it on with my hands. I can't do this blending."
In an interview with Newsweek, the mom revealed that her inspiration for the video came from seeing so many modern makeup tutorials. "Lillie loves doing my makeup, so I thought I'd show her how quick and simple it was back in the 90s when I watched my sister and mom," she said. Dawn shared that she knew Lillie would be "mortified" because she was not doing contour and using brushes. However, the woman felt it was fun to get her daughter's genuine reaction to 90s makeup. "But then it blew up as it brought back core memories for a lot of ladies."
