The woman has been sober for more than three years now and doesn't regret a single morning of waking up sober.
A person's life can change drastically in a short span of time with the support of their loved ones and through willpower. It might also be true for addictions like alcohol. A woman who has been sober for more than three years shared what her last day of drinking looked like and how she doesn't regret even one day of being sober. The person, Lauren, who goes by @laurenissober on TikTok, shared her story of overcoming alcohol addiction on the platform.
"I have been sober for 1213 days and I thought I would share with you what the last 24 hours of my drinking looks like," Lauren began. "So, April 25th, 2021, it was a Sunday around 6 AM or so." The mom got out of bed and immediately started drinking out of her secret cup of vodka that had been kept at the back of her refrigerator. "My husband and son were still in bed and I went to go and drink that vodka not to have a Sunday fun day but to get my hands to stop shaking and my heart to stop racing." Her anxiety was out of control on the day. Around 8 or 9, her husband and son left for the morning and the woman started chugging vodka instead of just sipping.
The woman then started doing the housework, the laundry and the other stuff. When she stepped out to water her plants, she noticed, "My husband and my son in the truck came driving right back up toward the house. But right behind them were three cars. Those three cars had my dad, my stepmom, my mom and my sister," the mom revealed. As her family lived two hours away from her, she knew exactly why they were there the moment she saw the cars. When the family came in, Lauren was already crying. "We walked inside, we sat around our kitchen island and one by one they began reading handwritten letters of concern about me." She shared how this had never happened before because her family didn't know about her issues with drinking and she had been doing a good job as a functioning alcoholic.
The husband had asked them for help and to try and convince Lauren to get help. They requested her to go to a detox center the following morning and had arranged for everything. Something changed in the moment for the woman, who was terrified but agreed to get help. "I knew I needed help but I could never voice it. So I am glad that help came to me," the mom expressed. But the rest of the day was still a "rollercoaster of emotions." Her family stuck around and let her drink which is important according to Lauren. She wavered several times about her decision but did end up going to detox nonetheless. They prepared for the next day including informing people at the woman's workplace that she would be absent from work. "My dad and my husband were going to be driving me to detox," Lauren pointed out.
"I cried like a little girl all the way there," she said, sharing that the last bit of alcohol in her stash in the morning when she left for the center was the last she had had alcohol ever since. "It was the best decision I ever made. It has not been easy by any stretch. There are still many challenging times, but I will never regret a day that I wake up sober. I never regret a night that I am sober," she continued. People took to the comments section of the video to appreciate the woman's journey. @jadechampion0 wrote, "Your family is amazing. They handled your alcoholism with so much love instead of judgment. They were so considerate of your needs Instead of making rehab a punishment." @paynetrayne1 commented, "This is a testimony. I’m not as brave as you yet, but I can’t wait to tell you when I am." @grammyc53 remarked, "My Sunday intervention was the same way, 26+ years sober, best decision I ever made."
