'I thought of the worst-case scenario instantly,' Stubbs, the mom said.
When Sonny Stubbs (@ansholetattoos) held her newborn son, Emerson, after an emergency C-section on September 6, 2024, everything seemed normal. Neither she nor the medical staff noticed anything unusual about his tiny, dark eyes. As weeks passed, however, something unusual about Emerson’s striking eyes caught Stubbs' attention. At first, the new mom ignored it. She thought she was overthinking it, but her son's distinctive appearance stayed on her mind. Stubbs finally raised her fear at Emerson's eight-week checkup, where a pediatrician's referral unraveled the mystery, Newsweek reported.
@ansholetattoos Hi, I have bilateral Coloboma and I wanna tell you a little bit about it. The story began with Emerson's arrival through an emergency C-section. Stubbs had to wait six hours before she could finally hold her newborn. Although he was small and delicate, he appeared healthy. "No one, not even his pediatrician, noticed anything unusual about Emerson's eyes on the day he was born," she recalled. Over the next two months, Stubbs and Ben kept noticing a strange look in Emerson's eyes.

"I honestly thought I was overreacting, and he was so little I just thought they would change as he got older," the new mom explained. However, Stubbs raised her concern with Emerson's pediatrician at his eight-week checkup. Sure enough, it was a smart move: they immediately sent him to a specialist, sensing something was wrong with the baby's eyes.
The specialist diagnosed Emerson with bilateral chorioretinal coloboma, making her mother's worst fears come true. The condition occurs when the embryonic fissure fails to seal properly during early pregnancy, leaving missing tissue in the eye. It affects about 2.4 children per 100,000 residents annually, often creating a keyhole-like pupil, a study (by Kelly M. Nakamura, BS; Nancy N. Diehl, BS; Brian G. Mohney, MD) published in JAMA Ophthalmology said. The median patient age at diagnosis was 3.9 months, showing how Sonny's early intervention helped Emerson's case. "I thought of the worst-case scenario instantly," she recalled.

Emerson has no central vision, meaning straight-ahead detail is missing. He is classified as legally blind. Yet at 2 years old, subsequent tests show his optic nerves remain unharmed. As per reports, the little boy regularly attends vision therapy to improve his vision. "In vision therapy, we do believe he has blind spots, but we also believe he is seeing more than doctors ever thought possible," Stubbs explained. In public, people often marvel at his unique gaze, not knowing the heartfelt story behind it.

Today, Stubbs is a stay-at-home mom who's raising Emerson and his five-month-old sister, Scout. Despite challenges, she refuses to put limits on her toddler's life. In fact, Stubbs believes she has no reason to, given that till now her boy has been able to do more than the doctors predicted. "I raise him exactly the same way I raise my able-bodied daughter," she added.

Meanwhile, reacting to Emerson's story, @alyssa_ig_ wrote, "Wait, his eyes are literally stunning; I’ve never seen anything like that, how amazing." @tyasialas said, "He’s so cute that I didn’t even notice his eyes!" Similarly, @darklikedusseee commented, "I’m lost because I don’t see anything but a cutie patotie."
